    thanks al

yes, the present card has those 2 ports as in the pic.

didnt know the other was DVI..

I have found a couple of TVs with VGA (Blankput), but will now look for those with DVI (they all seem to be HDMI ONLY)

Opinion seems to be that VGA to HDMI converted lead will not work

The idea of the new card would be to use the HDMI port - yes ?

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=dvi+output+to+hdmi+input+audio+and+visual&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&biw=989&bih=817&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=x-BAVZDVK4_hauSqgbgJ&ved=0CGEQsAQ
    AAAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!

So DO I have 4 options
DVI to HDMI visual lead and separate audio lead
    VGA to HDMI " " " " " "
New graphics card with HDMI to HDMI
Magic box from eg Maplins for visual, + audio leads

    yes, says that

    Video graphics

    ATI Radeon HD3450

    then it says
Integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 6150SE

*Integrated video is not available if a graphics card is installed.
    • Integrated graphics using nVidia GeForce 6150SE
    • Also supports PCI Express x16 graphics cards*
    can't be both ??
Man at Maplins says DVI must be DVI D - is it ?

This means - the motherboard has graphics on board. You can't use these if you plug a video card in. Yours came with a video card, therefore that's what you've been using all along. This is better. I guess you might have a blanked out space where the VGA output is meant to be beside the mouse and keyboard etc.
I can't answer the DVI-D question, but it mightn't be relevant. It does support HDCP (copy protection) allowing you to play protected HD content.
So DO I have 4 options
DVI to HDMI visual lead and separate audio lead
Good option, almost - Not the separate audio lead. The TV is very likely to be expecting sound & picture together in HDMI, so this is what you want at £11:

    VGA to HDMI " " " " " "
If this one can be done, it's troublesome and expensive as you've found. Forget it considering we now know you have DVI.
New graphics card with HDMI to HDMI
    Good option at £23.
Magic box from eg Maplins for visual, + audio leads
    Sounds expensive and complicated.

You can now choose between spending £11 and £29, with £11 being cheaper and easier, but £29 giving you a mass more graphics preformance.

Honest answer castle is, I don't know. Yours seems to have all of the main pins, the cross, and the 4 pins around it. I guess that means you've got DVI A and D. I did try to deduce this yesterday but didn't get anywhere.
I don't know where the insistence on DVI-D came from, but I think we're past that anyway, I don't see it as an issue.
I think you should buy that Amazon cable as a first attempt. That will get you sound and vision into an HDMI port, meaning you can go and buy whatever TV you like now and in the future.

I know that computer has VGA. I suggested finding a TV with DVI. VGA converts very easily to DVI.

DVI is simply a socket shape not a signal type and comes in 2 main flavours DVI-A (analogue) and DVI-D (Digital) - plus DVI-I which supports both.

VGA converts to DVI-A because its the same signal just a different socket shape.

Similarly HDMI converts to DVI-D because its also the same signal just a different socket shape and no audio.

A TV with DVI is likely to be DVI-D in which case a VGA to DVI-A cable is of no use and you are back to needing to convert the actual signal.

right then - took the plunge and bought/changed graphics card (Maplins £23 Radeon HD5450) so that I now have an hdmi port.
    Inserted, run disk... and

Standard VGA graphics adapter - FAILED
High Definition Audio converter - OK
High Definition Audio Device - OK

ran disk several times - same

Visuals on screen are different/fatter/bigger, but are 'OK'(Where do I change the resolution/aspect ?)

Hmmm.. cannot fill in the text box on AOL (though can fill in the address/recipient. Also cannot 'save' email if I click on 'Actions'. Why would this card affect this/email ? Looks as though it needs to go back !
As I won't be using VGA (will be using hdmi), DOES this 'Failure' matter/affect anything ?
Watching a film,, the picture is to obig for the screen. Sound is fine.
I am stilll watching on the small PC monitor. Have not connected to (just bought Samsung - goodbye LG!) TV as monitor, as Maplins wanted £79 for a 10m hdmi lead !)

hours later I have uninstalled the 'new stuff' and put the old graphics card back (feeling quite proud of that!).
All working looking normal. Display, AOL/email, etc.

So... have tried a new graphics card with hdmi output from a reputable source/Maplins.

Is my oly way forward/hdmi, to pay the computer man, or should I try another (£how much to pay) card ? Yes I could get something off ebay, but if I end up with this fiasco again, I get involved in refunds/returns...
