I you buy a new mobile/laptop or tablet buy one with screencast, this allows you to wirelessly watch programs or basically whatever's on your phone/laptop on your tv.

I assume your TV has this capability as mine has.

It's basically what they do on the current EE advert

there are 2 (red/white.. L/R) phono plugs on back of tv.
Not good enough - what are they labelled as?
I say nothing, but there must be 'a signal', as the microsoft logo DOES appear during the computer's start up, but that is all. Nothing after that. The tv screen is grey, not black/'blank'

So the cable works, you can see the logo at bootup, at 640x480 or something, but when you get to the proper resolution at the desktop, the TV doesn't like it. Can you set the resolution to something low (1024x768 for example) on the monitor, then plug into the TV, then set it to 1920x1080?
If that doesn't work, the TV may be fussy about the Hz, all is not lost...

I know you've talked about resolution before, but right clicking does not bring up that option on computer monitor
    .
TV shows top LH corner... HDMI4DVI 1920x1080

Dont know what resolution the computer/monitor is (other than good)

How to change the resolution on the TV/monitor - no option under 'picture' setting

Phonos are in a group of 5 not 2/vertical lised as
"Component AV in" - has a pic of dvd ? + disc + loads of leads
    top Yellow/Green Y/video
    next Blue Pb
    next Red Pr
    next White L audio
    next Red R audio

    thanks again

Right click a free space on the desktop. Don't you get an option 'Properties'? In that, there should be a 'Settings' tab which should show you the resolution.

    Anyway, it look from this:
TV shows top LH corner... HDMI4DVI 1920x1080
That your TV is getting a full HD signal, but doesn't want to display it. As I said in my last post, this may be to do with the frequency (Hz). I had a Samsung TV that would display nothing at 60Hz, but was perfectly happy at 59.9Hz!

Yep you've described perfectly a phono input. 3 for picture, 2 for sound. This is no use for getting sound in from your computer.
I think the other video card is the way to go.
You're having problems with the picture, you're NOT going to get the sound, with your current setup.

If I crt click on the desktop I get...

view sort refresh paste paste shortcut undo delete new personalise

If I rt click when I am on a webpade I do get 'properties' at the bottom, but that only brings up details/properties of the current page that I am on.....

You think the graphics card is the way forward then ? (so that I have an hdmi lead/connection.

Any recommendations (for my specific computer)

    thanks

OK, found it ! Personalise brought up resolution.
Have change this to maximum, which is 1680x1050
All is smaller and sharper now (on PC monitor).

Still nothing on TV - shows 1920/1080/60p

PC monitor shows 60hz. changed to 59 (only option). No difference

Hi Castle - progress! You've been using your monitor at the wrong resolution all this time. It'll feel like a new monitor now!
I had found a vid card earlier in the thread on Amazon - £23 inc delivery.
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-V212-066R-Radeon-Graphics-Memory/dp/B0063KHKKY/ref=sr_1_4?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1430311508&sr=1-4&keywords=pci+express+16
It's a PCI Express 16x card which I believe fits your board.
Maybe you should buy off the high street again to make returns easier though:

Both of these have the required HDMI out.

ASUS1 GB AMD Radeon HD 5450 PCIe Graphics Card

this was the card that I bought before and didn't (I could get it to) work.

    "
"You've bought a graphics card now, which is the best solution. Let's get it working.
    (this one, I assume)
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/msi-amd-ra...ics-card-a05lq

Looks like you've done the hard bit and physically fitted it, but the drivers won't install.
You've put the old card back in. LEAVE IT THERE FOR NOW.
Try running that disk now, and see if you can get the drivers to install.
Did it work? Yes? Shut down and install the new card.
No? Goto here and download the latest 'Catalyst' driver - I've assumed you're on Windows 7 64 Bit, if not, select from the menu on the site 'Drivers' then your OS under GPU drivers.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/downloa...Windows+7+-+64"

(GPU Drivers > Windows Vista 32 bit > Catalyst Software Suite revision No 13.12 for me - yes ?)

If I get a new (the same) card, I should try the above, yes ? The one I previously bought was Maplins at £23 (£7 cheaper than PC world), but IS ? the same one. I will get that one, yes ?

Yes - if you buy that card again, install that driver FIRST, with you old card in. THEN install the card.
If you go into the graphics properties (since you now know how to change resolution), you'll be looking for the name of the graphics card, rather than 'standard VGA controller' that we discussed before.

    Al, me again !
Bought the same Maplins cardASUS AMD HD 5450. Downloaded drivers GPU list Vista HP 32 bit. Put card in/connected hdmi and .......... a picture/mirror everything* on the TVmonitor that is on the PC monitor !
    BUT
1.) No sound - I thought hdmi did support sound
2.) Max resolution setting that will support a picture is 1400x1050 (at 1920x1080 screen says "input signal out of range change to 1680x1050 60hz")
Anything higher than 1400x1050 will not produce a picture on tv. The 1400/1050 res IS acceptable though, on PC & TV
3.) I bought a wireless keyboard (Logitech), which is connecting (the pointer moves round the tv screen), but "cannot use pointer to control menus from external sources"
?? how can you use the tv as a monitor then (or have I got it all wrong from the outset ?). I thought I could turn the pc on in one room, go into the tv room and use the tv/monitor and keyboard, in the same way as I do the pc. I mean, to navigate with the wireless keyboard mouse, eg to point at eg AOL, open mail and type reply. All the monitor is capable of ? is mirroring what is on the PC

    * it is not an exact mirror. All that shows is the current/last window that I opened on the PC. There is no series of the windows showing open at the top/bottom, that there is on the PC
