castle96 - I got your PM - sorry I put an MSE link in, instead of one to Amazon.
It was meant to be to something like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/1aTTack-DVI-HDMI-Cable-DVI-D-Transmission/dp/B005N9DYBK/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1430825871&sr=1-2&keywords=dvi+audio+to+hdmi

but reading a review, it looks like it doesn't actually put the sound inside the HDMI plug, but you still need the separate audio, so I don't recommend this anymore.

You've bought a graphics card now, which is the best solution. Let's get it working.
    (this one, I assume)
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/msi-amd-radeon-hd5450-1gb-10661334mhz-gddr3-1gb-graphics-card-a05lq

Looks like you've done the hard bit and physically fitted it, but the drivers won't install.
You've put the old card back in. LEAVE IT THERE FOR NOW.
Try running that disk now, and see if you can get the drivers to install.
Did it work? Yes? Shut down and install the new card.
No? Goto here and download the latest 'Catalyst' driver - I've assumed you're on Windows 7 64 Bit, if not, select from the menu on the site 'Drivers' then your OS under GPU drivers.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+7+-+64

Maybe the up to date ones will work better. Swap graphics cards.
    If your resolution isn't right:
Firstly, right click in a blank area of the desktop, and click 'Screen Resolution'. This will let you set the resolution higher, and hopefully to whatever your monitor is. If it's a full HD screen, that's 1920x1080 for example.
    Looks better?
The problems you're having with text boxes and videos were caused by the resolution being too low, and should now be fixed.
OK. 'Standard VGA graphics adaptor' is computer speak for 'a graphics card, I don't know which one'! -once the graphics drivers are installed properly this will go away. Computers will show this for all cards before they have drivers installed, no matter what ports they have at the back.

Get an HDMI cable from Amazon or Poundland or something, most of the tech shops will really stick the arm in for HDMI leads.

How are we doing now then?

    thanks again
I reinstalled the original card and did an uninstall on the new one.
I took it back to Maplins and got a refund so can't try what you suggest (unless I am brave enough to get another/same, and try again !) It was easy to fit, but the disk/instal just wasn't having it. I was still using the original PC monitor (HP w2007v) but dont know what the resolution is (other than 'OK/good picture').

Re the resolution thing.. I have right clicked but there is no option to deal with the resolution.

Beginning to feel I will have to pay someone to come in and deal.
Just to try it, I have ordered a dvi to hdmi - £1.79 and a 30 ft hdmi lead. I will try this and at least see if I can get a picture on the new tv/monitor. Sound will be the next problem (hopefully sorted with another long lead !
Again, thanks for your patience. "A little knowedge...."

You rushed that a bit with the video card return! And I still think that was the best option.
What version of Windows are you on, and is it 64 or 32 bit?
I do actually have a Mac Mini connected to my TV, via a DVI to HDMI lead - I've never had the sound problem you're facing, because my sound goes to a surround sound amp.
If you have a stereo, old or new, or bought a soundbar or whatever, with the right connections, this would also solve your problem, but if you're going to spend money, it should be on the vid card.
    We'll get you there!

    thanks again
how do I find out which version of Windows ?
Why would I need a stereo/soundbar ? The object is to have sound coming out of the tv/monitor
Yes, should have delayed the return of the card, but it messed up everything. Right click does not bring up 'resolution' options

Version of Windows - Right click on 'My Computer' on the desktop, or 'Computer' from inside the Start menu and click Properties. Will hopefully tell you what version of Windows and 32 or 64 bit. This is to help me with drivers.
I guess you have Windows XP, so you right click on the desktop, and click 'Properties' IIRC and maybe there's a settings tab you need to click, to get at the resolution. You should be going to 1920x1080 if you've a full HD screen, then you'll also need to check overscan settings on the computer, and the TV, to make sure you're getting pixel-to-pixel. This is very obvious with a computer, as your taskbar might vanish!
I mention soundbar, because as I said, TVs usually don't have additional sound inputs for their HDMI inputs, they'll be expecting the sound through HDMI, not stereo jack or stereo phono. You WILL NOT get sound with that lead you bought.

    Windows Vista Home Premium

    32 bit

there are 2 (red/white.. L/R) phono plugs on back of tv.

I know you will be right re the leads (but still had to try!). DVI lead yet to turn up, but I won't be expecting success.

The 10m gold plated/braided HDMI lead is a fantastic lead £11.99, though not doubt totally superfluous.

I say nothing, but there must be 'a signal', as the microsoft logo DOES appear during the computer's start up, but that is all. Nothing after that. The tv screen is grey, not black/'blank'

I've got this TV in the 55 inch version, I'm not sure it's worth buying it in the 40inch version though.

Have a look in the clearance section of Richer Sounds as this is where I purchased my from. Brand new in an opened box but with all the protective covers on and unused. I got 25% off the normal price plus another 10% for VIP (You can sign up for VIP for free) and I also got the 5 year warranty so I ended up paying about £580 for the TV.

It's a great tv, if you watch SD programs the picture is not the greatest but from a HD or UHD source it's superb. The PS4 looks amazing on it.

It's not the thinnest TV going so if your want a really thin TV look elsewhere.

    The smart menu is excellent.

If you're using BT Fon to connect to the internet it won't work due to the landing page of BT Fon.

Rather than using cables can you not use the screen mirroring, you can also flick (I think) stuff from your mobile / tablet to the tv if they have the capability.

I found it handy to download the more comprehensive manual from the Samsung website.

    Have already bought it.

    BT Fon ???

How does this screen monitoring work then. This is for connecting a suitable (dont have one) smart phone, isn't it.
I have an older computer with no hdmi port, that I want to show on the tv (as a monitor)
See previous. Have tried a new graphics card. Cables were a last resort I think.
As said, I do get the Windows logo showing on the tv when I start the PC, so the cable does seem capable of carrying a visual signal
