honestly at screen sizes less than 50" and typical viewing distances going for a 4k set is a bit pointless - especially true if you're one of the vast majority that has space for a 42" screen or less. the additional cost for 4k set and content just does not justify the limited improvement in viewing pleasure!
save yourself a wad and stick with 1080p.
Totally agree, as this new technology is at the moment liquid, in that the manufactures are already planning 2nd gen UHD TVs. Namely 8K. So one could end up with a dead duck in the space of a few short years.
I'm going to look at an LG 1080p 42" HD TV tomorrow. Its £250.0 -
I can only find ONE TV that has a VGA connection (and NO Freeview HD !)
Blaupunkt 40/233i £199 not smart/3d.

Can there really be only 1 x tv with a VGA port ? or will the lead VGA to HDMI work ?
If you want HD then you will have to buy some new HD kit, not a lead. Also in regard to your Sky HD box, you will have to subscribe to the HD channels and view them on a HD TV to get content in HD.0 -
the lead is 'only' to connect the computer to the tv to use the tv as a monitor (as 'no'/1 tvs seem to have vga ports anymore).
some say the lead will connect/work, ie transfer audio and visual from the computer to the tv/monitor, some say it won't.
Surely someone out there has this connection and can say either way
"Unfortunately new TVs since 2013 doesn't support VGA ports and we cannot guarantee that this adapter will work as HDMI is a digital connection and VGA is analogue one.

I think that you need an analog to digital converter box to use VGA to HDMI.Therefore don't think the lead you are referring to, would work for video HOWEVER no VGA connection carries audio , it is video only-I have my old laptop connected to an upstairs TV VGA port to allow me to watch Sky Go and I also have the line out audio on the laptop connected to the TV for sound.:)0

"This simple to use converter box allows any PC with a VGA output to connect to any HDMI enabled display device, such as a flat screen TV or projector. Ideal for TVs or projectors with no VGA input, or where those inputs are being used by other devices. It also converts stereo sound from the PC in the HDMI signal."

Though 4 x the cost of the lead I was looking at, surely from £Maplins£, this WILL do the job ? It says it WILL....
If the leads I was looking at don't carry audio ans visual, I wonder why they say they do..0 -

It should do the job, but how well is another question.
Presumably your computer only has a VGA output and no HDMI or DVI?
You could also look at USB to HDMI converters but again you have to consider the quality of the product but also in this case the speed of your computer.0 -
Full HD is approximately 2K - it's just slightly under. The K measurement is from the long side of the image. 4K is about 4000 pixels on the long edge compared to 1920 for full HD.
castle96 - you're really not going to have fun with your old computer and new TV. As I said in your other thread, find a TV with DVI (easily adapted to from VGA, unlike HDMI), or buy a video card with HDMI. Can someone find us a video card with HDMI for £10/£20, the price he wants to pay for an adaptor? With it being VGA, what's it even capable of doing, that you would put up on a big screen?
I also don't remember if you said that your current computer can actually display 1920x1080? If not, another good reason for a new card.0 -
must admit I dont know what the speed/card is. It is a Hewlett Pack HP.Pavilion.a6421.uk desktop about 7 yrs old.
I know it is a problem mixing old to new. Computer does not have hdmi or dvi
(re USB - it has 2 usbs at the front. IS it a possiblility to use these via an adapter, to the tv ? - I know, I know, back to leads again...)
I am reluctant to pull a computer apart and put in new cards (though first time for everything). With a new card, this would ? have an hdmi port that would connect directly to tv. New stuff to new stuff. Any suggestions re a card then please. (Further Q. Would the new card affect the existing PC monitor - HP w2007v - I have connected via VGA ? - there would still be a VGA connection on the new card ?)
With the Maplins thing, I can always take it back if it doesnt work, not having pulled the computer apart.0 -
With that Maplins box you still need a seperate stereo output from the PC (looks like there are twin RCA connectors on it) ;it then combines the video and audio signals to give an HDMI output for the TV.0

OK so we're talking about this beastie:

You have a PCI Express x16 slot for a graphics card to go into.
The specs on the website say that you have an ATI Radeon HD3450 - is this right - have a look at the pics - it shows a DVI output! In this case you simply buy a DVI to HDMI cable. You need to add sound, come back for advice on this when you confirm what you've got. This card DOES support 1920x1080 resolution.
Or maybe you've got the integrated graphics just. nVidia GeForce 6150SE.
If you want to upgrade, I VERY QUICKLY found this for £23 which I THINK will work. DON'T BUY IT YET!

This has VGA, DVI and HDMI out.0
