Yes thats right. It will look better, but not what you see in the shops.

But, unlike 3D which is dying a slow death, 4K is here to stay and content sources will improve over time.

Isn't that what they said about 3D?

I don't know about 'here to stay' but for the vast majority of people 4K is yet to arrive.

Totally agree. But YouView from BT will have a 4K box out before the end of the year -

    Don't bother with 4K yet.
Until 3D technology has decided which route it will take, and a lot of films are being released in 4K then there's no point. You'll invest in the technology now but when it becomes useful, TVs will have new features.

Have to agree -the price of 1080p large sets has come down so much, that they are close to becoming "throw away" items, especially if you can find a "dumb" set -not much point having built in functions like catch up services if they (ie the manufacturers) are going to drop support a couple of years down the line!! eg Sony dropping support for Youtube:(

OP is looking at buying a 4K TV, but has yet to enjoy HD (that's 2K ish for comparison) yet?!
    Upscaling is literally, making bigger.
SD has 500 ish lines top to bottom. To fill your 1080p screen, it MUST be upscaled. There's clever stuff to be done to make it look as good as possible, and as long as it doesn't get too artificial, it can make an improvement. It will NOT be HD content though.
Apply the same to upscaling HD to 4K. To fill the screen it has to take 1920 lines left to right of information and fill 4,000 ish with it. Again, improvements can be made, but just like zooming in on a photo, it can't possibly be as good as 4K content.
Maybe OP should wait for 8K?...

    thanks for all your comments
After ringing Sky and getting a £15pmth reduction, it turns out that I DO have a SkyHD box (duh), sorry fro confusion.

So if Sky is HD and the TV has a Freeview HD tuner, I will be upscaling, though not as far as from HD.

All this because my LG 3d 'Smart' TV is busted, and I am hoping that 'when' the engineer comes (Tues appt. cancelled just as a new motherboard - which was certified as OK when the TV went away for repair the first time - has to come from Holland ! - no spares here ? - another wasted day off booked. 3d I would not bother with again, 4k looks a little 'hopeful' and Smart - seems I can connect my older computer's VGA to a modern TV with no VGA port, using a £10 lead/converted from ebay.
Hopefully engineer will fail/condemn it and it's goodbye LG and look for something else 'simpler'

Full HD is approximately 2K - it's just slightly under. The K measurement is from the long side of the image. 4K is about 4000 pixels on the long edge compared to 1920 for full HD.

honestly at screen sizes less than 50" and typical viewing distances going for a 4k set is a bit pointless - especially true if you're one of the vast majority that has space for a 42" screen or less. the additional cost for 4k set and content just does not justify the limited improvement in viewing pleasure!

save yourself a wad and stick with 1080p.

My comment "seems I can connect my older computer's VGA to a modern TV with no VGA port, using a £10 lead/converted from ebay"

    just came across this....

Additionally, if you have a device that sends an analog signal and only HDMI or SCART ports on your TV, you cannot do anything even if you purchase a VGA to HDMI or VGA to SCART converter adapter. This is simply because even when you use these adapters, most screens will still not display the analog over the HDMI or SCART ports. This is why, if you need to plug in a VGA device into your TV, you should look for a TV with a VGA connector as this is the only way you can be sure that the TV can actually receive VGA.

IS that right, or will the VGA to hdmi lead work ? (why would they sell them otherwise ?)

I can only find ONE TV that has a VGA connection (and NO Freeview HD !)

    Blaupunkt 40/233i £199 not smart/3d.
    Richer Sounds

Can there really be only 1 x tv with a VGA port ? or will the lead VGA to HDMI work ?
