It's 200 or so kms along the Prithvi Highway, and for the most part the views are great. If you want to get an idea of the bus ride there's plenty on YouTube. Here's one...

I'll have to put Mr Duke by the window, or he'll moan if my head gets in the way of his photo. I've already thought up a lie to tell everyone as to why I have to sit on the right side too, I shall say that I'm always very, very, travel sick if I sit on the left.
Was your plane full to Abu Dhabi? I've just checked my seats again, & there's hardly anyone on the flight & it's not long for blast off.
Thanks Pete.0 -

Memory tells me that the Etihad flight to Abu Dhabi was quite full. As Abu Dhabi is Etihad's hub I'm a bit surprised that your flight still has plenty of room, as pax carry on from Abu Dhabi to all destinations in the ME, SE Asia, and India. Hope it is quiet for you though.
Only a few on our flight carried on to Kathmandu. That flight was v.full, and the amount of cabin bags that folk carted onboard was OTT.
Tick-tock not long now.:)0 -
BA World sale just popped up in my inbox.....I've just booked my Miami solo trip! All came in within budget, flights AND accommodation! Now I have something to look forward to! YAAAAAYYYY
33 Days, 14 Hours to go!
So much for solo trip!
A girlfriend of mine said she'd love to come along, I'd already booked and paid for my trip so offered her sharing of my room for free, BA actually refunded me £2 LOL, so now my solo is no longer a solo! :j:j She's bought her ticket, so we are all confirmed and ready to go!!

I've started to get a plan together for India. My friend and I will have to meet in a few weeks to get the plan finalised. We don't generally book much of the accommodation before we go but as some of the places on this trip aren't overburdened with hotels I think that we may do this time.
Places on the list so far are:
One night in Kolkata.
Fly to Bogdagra Airport and then about 3-4 hours by jeep to Darjeeling. There seem a few things to do there. A trek to Tumling, an early start to go up Tiger Hill for sunrise over the Himalayas, A ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (aka Toy Train) and the Darjeeling Ropeway (cable car). Although we've both been to a tea plantation (in Sri Lanka) it wouldn't be right not to visit one here too.
Next stop is another couple of hours away - Kalimpong. This is a fairly small village but offers several nice looking walks.
From there it's a further 3 hours to Gantok which has a fairly mixed write up in Lonely Planet but on balance seems worth it and also has a helicopter service back to the airport at Bogdagra.
I've never flown in a helicopter and really like the idea and it's also 40 minutes against 5 hours by jeep. The only real issue is that there's a strict 10kg baggage per passenger. Bearing in mind that it'll be cold there but hot in Kolkata we will need to pack fairly well to get under this limit but we are both light packers and this shouldn't be beyond us. If it comes to it we can discard some items there and purchase more in Kolkata.
For Kolkata itself I don't think that we will plan anything in advance. It has plenty of sights and also an overnight trip to The Sunderbans National Park to look (probably in vain) for tigers.
I'm a cricket fan so am keeping my fingers crossed that England will play at Eden Gardens but if not then a domestic game there or perhaps a tour of the venue will suffice.
It's still almost 7 months away but I'm getting excited already.0 -
Reads like a great trip Ballard. Might just have a look at copying [sort of] your itinerary for sometime next year.
Only been in a helicopter once. Flew in a Sea King off the flight deck of HMS HERMES to Stornoway in lousy weather while steaming off the north of Scotland.0 -

It's starting to come together. So far these are only my proposals as my pal has been busy recently whilst I'm only job hunting. He has a different guide book so when he comes to look at possibilities there's every chance that he'll see something that isn't in the LP (or I simply missed).
The reason that we don't generally book much in the way of accommodation beforehand is that we like to have a rough idea of places to visit but with some flexibility. As mentioned, it'll be a problem to do that with this trip due to lack of options in some places (notably Kalimpong). The downside is that if the weather is particularly poor in Darjeeling we won't have the flexibility to skip another aspect. The fact that we'd have the domestic flights to adhere to simply reinforces that.
It'll be great, though. This will be my 6th India jaunt. I try not to return to the same country too often but this one is so vast with such contrasts between areas that it can be pretty much like visiting a new country.0 -
Great to see this thread still going! I included both my holidays last year, Gulluk Turkey and then Sharm Al Sheik in October.
Turkey was as brilliant as ever but unfortunately we got caught up in the delays caused by the terrorist bombing in Sharm and our flights were cancelled causing a three day delay, although we made the best of it.
We aren't returning to Sharm this year or next (the villa is fully booked) so I am off to Gulluk again leaving next week and then again in August.
I shall be sitting here watching the boats. Bliss-0
