I'm interested in the £21pm Ultrafast fibre option. Does anyone know what happens if you move home during the 18 months? Can you transfer the contract? Any charges? Can't see anything in the Ts&Cs.

    https://www.sse.co.uk/help/phone-and-broadband/moving-home#item1

    Specifically:

To move your phone or broadband to a new address, let us know at least 14 working days before you move, if possible. This gives us enough time to set everything up so there's little or no interruption to your service.

When you contact us, we'll need to know your moving date, your new address and an alternative contact number (such as a mobile).

We'll check if there's an available BT line at the new address that we can use for your service. If there isn't one, we can arrange a new connection for you. There may be a charge for this if an engineer needs to come out. If any work needs to be done, we'll let you know.

A lot of very worrying posts over in the HUKD thread about throttling - people being cut back to a tiny fraction of the normal speed for a whole month just for one day's largish usage.

Need to think very carefully before switching to something with an 18 month lock-in.

Surely they must provide guidelines on how much data can be downloaded before restricting, or set times that they restrict/traffic shape.

You'd think so but there's nothing at all anywhere in the T&C. I've asked them the question but I'm expecting an evasive reply.

    How much is largish usage?

With streaming I could be up to 60-80 GB a month by now, possibly up to 5 in a day. Surely that wouldn't trigger it?

Yes, thats right. SSE don't only traffic manage but speed throttle as well. And they do it to everyone. Why do you think they are so cheap?

Edit - In other words let me put it like this... Whats the point in having cheap broadband from a cheap provider if they won't let you use it?

There are only 4 main providers who no longer traffic manage and they are Sky, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and BT. Notable minors are Zen, who are award winning no less. And cost a bomb. Cheap means cheap.

Impossible to say, but if you look through some of the comments on this HUKD thread it doesn't seem to take much. And there's even the suggestion that traffic shaping takes place at peak times anyway - and peak just means 'most of the time'!

Here is an exert from a chat I had with an sse advisor

SSE advisor(it shows his name but i have removed): I have spoken with our Broadband specialists who have advised that although we do have a Fair Use and Traffic management policy writen into your contract, SSE do not enforce these policies at present. In the future if these policies come into place and your service was limited. It would be limited to your lowest speed which would be 61.9 mbps.

Just had SSE installed today (well turned on actually) The engineer failed to turn up, Naughty man. It turns out although I made an appointment he doesn't actually turn up or so they say.. so why an appointment?
So switch over went very well, one service (talktalk) went off and after i installed my own router/modem, off I went.. First a movie to download, 7.8mb/s download pretty good as I only have ever had 4.2mb/s, and the movie dropped in in minutes.
Upload speed DO ACTUALLY run at 20mb/s this is brilliant as I've never had above 2mb/s
Reset password, no problem as it's easy access to the router GUI.
    And then SSID.
All is well so far.. with just one unplanned router restart strangely as I was writing this comment!
The Router a Technicolor TG589VAC looks very smart, and although the signal on the bottom floor of my house (3 storey) is just 'fair' my Amazon firestick works very well.
Time will tell but so far so very bloomin fab!
