If you are on a monthly billing cycle you may have the same issue as myself and my mother.

You are probably being overcharged, as the billing cycle is every 28 days, yet you are charged the standard monthly rate. This means you pay 13 "monthly" bills every year.

I have created a thread about this but as a new user I'm not allowed to link to it. Also reported to Ofcom.

I'm not with SSE but I must say this a good find, Well done :)
What happens if you push this button?
  • I have been with SSE since they launched their special promotion - I don't think they do that anymore - but in that time they have been a good supplier.
I've never had issues connecting or using the service, the online portal is easy to use and you download a bill every month, and it's really cheap at £12.12 a month!
I prefer doing as much stuff as I can online - GB Energy is the same - so for people who prefer to call, it might not be a suitable set up.
I have no complaints about SSE at all.

My speeds post 5pm every day for the past 2-3 weeks.

Oh and this is over 2 lines, paying for upto 76Mbps.

I took SSE Standard Broadband in September 2015. Must say worst ISP I have ever had. Average download speed of 1.6mb best 2.3mb. Multiple speed tests rank me F+ and lower than 89% of UK. I live 4km from Sheffield BT exchange and 50 metres from street cabinet.
SSE did send me a better looking router but just as bad. So I bought a used Billion 7800N router, tweaked the SNR and now get 3.3mb download but SSE were reluctant in giving me username/password to set it up.
I suppose £12 p/month gets you online for basic internet use, banking, email and booking a holiday. Anything more strenuous then forget it. Catch Up TV buffers and hangs consistently, live streaming is impossible. At best it's a bare bones set up so don't expect to much if you have multiple users at home.
In the end I gave up and currently in process of switching to PlusNet. I've got 10 month left on SSE contract, no doubt I will be hit by cancellation fees, but frankly it's a small price to be rid of them.

@KOVALAM - I'd love to know how you get on with your switch to Plusnet - I may be following.
Both Plusnet and SSE use BT infrastructure so I'm unsure that there would be benefits.
Anyway - keep us posted. Good luck.
  • My SSE broadband was the standard ADSL and I knew I would be lucky to get anywhere near 6MB download. But 1.6MB was a kick in the nuts. So I went for PlusNet fast broadband 38MB-40MB, I appreciate I may not get the top speed with PlusNet, but for what I need 15MB or over would suit me fine. Just need to stream HD football & cricket. Guy at PlusNet more or less guaranteed I would get all the HD sport I need. Should be changed over 23rd May.

I went for "Superfast Broadband" from SSE (FTTC) with a minimum speed of 22 Mbps (their quote).
What transpired was a Maximum around 7Mbps - quite a difference.
Let us know what things are like when you do get connected with PlusNet.

Very tempted by the current SSE offer of £21pm for fibre - including line rental and anytime calls.

Pretty much unbeatable, and with some cashback too.

But there are some worrying posts in here.

I'm with BT at the moment, getting a very stable 30mbps - is SSE really that much worse, or is it worth a go. 18 months is a long contract if it's unreliable. :o
