  • I read loads on this subject, so forgive me if I am preaching to the converted. Although I have been contacted by AI and have sent away the claim form, as you know this only covers from 1/2005 to date or cancellation of cover. I thought I had cancelled this cover in 2007, but didnt have any proof as I had shredded everything, apart from the original 'welcome' letter and booklet from Tesco Card, which was selling the Sentinel product. Neither did I have any proof of payments. So I called the AI help line, who told me the exact dates that I took out the cover, and the date I cancelled which turned out to be 2012! Having read Martin's advice regarding claiming prior to 2005, I wrote to Tesco Bank on 31st August. on 4th September I recieved a letter of apology and an offer of £137.32 - this is for the premiums from 00-05, with 8% interest, minus tax. THANKYOU MSE X!! Note; I put the wrong date on the AI form, but the help line told me they will act on what info they hold anyway. :j
I've been called a witch more than once....
  • I received the letter and remember taking out Sentinel insurance costing £25 for a couple of years, but while I don't remember the exact dates, I am certain that I took it out AND cancelled it prior to 2005. If I return this letter and receive no compensation due to the fact my involvement was pre-2005, am I signing away any right to pursue a subsequent private claim (as outlined elsewhere on this site)? That is what the declaration in Section D on the form implies to me. Is it possible to clarify this in the Guide, which also seems to suggest that if you took out the cover prior to 2005 you won't get a letter at all? Lastly, do you really need to specify £5k or £10k in the claim? Surely the fact you were missold insurance cover is enough?
  • So just to clarify, Moongazer, you successfully pursued two separate claims for pre 2005 and post 2005, simultaneously? That's great (and probably answers my question above). The AI letter seems to imply that pre-2005 claims won't result in anything, as the law only changed in 2005, so that's useful to know.

I claimed from Barclays for pre-2005 and the post 2005 claim is ongoing throught he AI scheme
  • Thanks Castle96, I have now got my start and end dates from the AI hotline (I actually had this useless protection for 5, not 2 years) and despite my memory, it was cancelled only in 2006. So I will pursue the line of pursuing claims though both. (Finding my credit card details from ten years ago will be challenging though as not with the same bank anymore.)

Got my reclaim form now and want to claim as we were mis-sold the product BUT I want to still have a product that allows me to make one phone call if I have my cards lost or stolen!. If my cover is automatically cancelled what can I do?? Can I reapply to Sentinel to start a new policy? Can I apply in my wife's name and have me as the second family member? Anybody got any idea?
I've asked this before but on this forum there are a lot of questions and not many answers!!--why don't MSE people address some of these concerns?? Do they read their own forum?
  • some interesting information here, thank you.
I have filled out my form which is ready to post but I have had Sentinel card protection since at least 1993 ,it may be earlier but cant find paperwork. So from what I understand ,I will have to claim seperately for the period 1993 up until 2005 .
Where will I post the pre 2005 claim letter to Barclaycard ?
    thank you.

Further to my post#97 I have delved back and find I took it out with TSB in 1987!!! but have paid it since using 5 different credit cards over the years. Any clues as to how to go about claiming for 1987 to 2005?
    Who would tell me?
  • Having read letter and claim form you lose your protection as soon as you try to make a claim. This means if you have only used a third of your 3 year fees you will lose £60 and might gain a refund. If you read cancellation terms there is no refund. Thus is it worth making a claim and then renewing cover at £40 pa?

I've just found a renewal latter from 2011 that my late wife had filed safely and it answers the question of £5,000 or £100,000 for me. It seems she had the £100,000 cover.

What's interesting is the renewal fee then was £39.95 p.a. and as that is approximately mid point in the AI scheme claim period ( 2005 - 2015 ) I fail to see how £25 is the average fee since 2005! I'll have to see if I can find renewal letters for earlier years.

EDIT : Found another renewal for 2008 at £29.00. I can't see how that averages out to £25! Or have I misunderstood? The average for all customers is £25 but it may be more or less depending on the product and so the compensation could be higher or lower and not fixed at £25.

EDIT 2 : I've just re-read the MSE info page again. You get back everything paid. Sorry for generating any confusion.
