    LOL yes it is.

To be fair, I agree that a choc orange for a gift is a bit tight :D And I did say so in my first post. But I also think that the brother is a bit of a wimp and a mommy's boy to be reporting back to her that he was hacked off, and asking her to have a word with his bro and SIL. I assume he did, seeing as the mother DID scold them about it! :rotfl:

It just sounds really childish and infantile behaviour.

And let's face it, some people get NOTHING from anyone for their birthdays, so he also sounds like an ungrateful whiney childish brat to me. :rotfl:

Im not sure he asked them to have a word, unless that's been explained after the opening post, its possible that the mum just took it upon herself to say he was cheesed off.

I get the point about some people getting nothing for their birthdays, but seriously Id rather have a pair of socks than a short dated choc orange, not because I don't like choc, but if you get a choc orange thats got a short date on it, if you have a brain you might think, that's been lying in someone elses house and they've just passed it onto me.

In that scenario, Id much rather someone just sent a card saying happy birthday, see you soon for a drink (or something like that). Its not the gift, its the lack of thought behind it, seriously, you'd give a 7 year old a choc orange for their christmas or part of it, you really wouldn't give a close family member a choc orange for their 30th birthday, its just wrong, but to regift it?

Does the brother in law actually know it was regifted? I assume not.

OP to be honest I am speechless!!

Yes I know the cost of buying and renovating a new home as we are 18 months down the line, but we had to do from paying full private rent and we managed, and I have never given anyone a chocolate orange as their main present, I get money is tight but for goodness sake, if I was your BIL I would rather you hadn't bothered.

It was his 30th, his brother must know full well that his family exchange proper gifts... I know it is the thought that counts but there was no thought was there, as you didn't even buy it!

I am intrigued, did you even bother to wrap it?

Honestly, I can see why he is miffed.

I fail to see why you cannot understand why he is rather upset.

Surely over the last four years (at least) of your relationship you have noticed their present giving.

Would you be chuffed if they gave your child 50p in a card and said sorry moneys a bit tight.

Do you pay rent to your mum?

I would be miffed too. This is your baby's uncle.

My parents are selling up and moving to a retirement place soon, and we have spoken about buying their house, which my Dad is keen for us to do.

The talk of the table at the moment is that we would put down £40k deposit and they would sell it to us for between £150k - £160k (they've not had it valued yet but my Mum expects it to go for £170k, but I think it's more like £180k). We would be keeping £12k in savings as the electrics need rewiring and the boiler is on it's last legs.

I'm aware that there may be tax implications in regards to if they died within 7 years of the sale going through, however, what other tax implications could there be if they are selling it to us for less than the market value? Would it just be the stamp duty issue, as in the tax man wanting more stamp duty from us? If so, is there a way to pay more stamp duty to make up for the fact that we've bought it for less than market value? Or is that not the only tax implication?

    :)

Nice little £20-30k gift from her parents there, just because.

  • Well on the basis its my mum's birthday this weekend (and its not a significant birthday either) I might cancel the restaurant I've had booked since last August (I kid you not) and take her to the local Tesco cafe instead.....picked up an voucher today which means I an get her a free cup of tea and a piece of cake for a £1

This entire thread should be moved to old style, it could change birthdays as we know it.

Chocolate buttons, after eights, a creme egg if you are really good you might get some green and blacks.

How long could one choc orange be regifted before it gets eaten. Its my birthday next month, I now have the fear incase anyone gives me a short dated choc orange.
