Update!

Bad news - my birthday present was used/preloved/second hand :mad:

Good news - it was an antique sapphire and diamond ring :T

He also bought me an antique pill box on a chain - he has suggested I can use it for keeping my HRT pills in :rotfl:

To assuage the psycho-toddler's need for a birthday cake I jammed a candle in a mini-muffin and let her blow it out (and eat it). We also tried (and failed dismally) to make balloon animals. We got the face paints out and ended up looking like extras from a schlock-horror film

Fab birthday all round - though a chocolate orange would have made it extra special
