I'm hoping I get something a bit more than some re-gifted chocolate for my birthday tomorrow! The psycho-toddler is still awake at 11pm as she is beyond excited - I think she is expecting a party with balloons, an entertainer and party bags. Not very likely at age 48 :rotfl:

Happy Birthday LilElvis! Hope you are having a brilliant day.

I remember a couple of years ago my DGD (then aged about 3) arriving with her mummy and daddy and baby brother to see me on my birthday. She entered the house, looked around in amazement and said in a rather shocked tone: 'But where are all your people?'

She'd clearly expected to find crowds, balloons and streamers, and a party in full swing.

I regifted a just out of date box of chocolates to my mum for mother's day, plus some flower bulbs from a poundshop.

She was thrilled despite my thrift (if you admire this gesture) or stinginess (if you do not).

I've given her second hand scarves, though they were at least Boden.

My brother once gave me back a bottle of booze at xmas that I bought him the previous year, though he may have at least re-wrapped it. I think the message was 'I only drink vintage Moet & Chandon champagne, not award winning obscure ones that I can't brag about on Facebook.

Actually dying laughing here, this thread is hilarious.

O dear - I had been having a difficult week but the responses here have right cheered me up and I have over 200 more to read !

Mrs chiefie is 60 in two years time and I'm thinking that the cruise around Barbados could be well off the agenda now. This is going to give me ideas !!!!

Seriously though - it is about the lack of thought not the value. To be given something second hand that had no personal touch (other than it was his parents originally) is probably what grated a tad:T

Ive happily accepted regifted presents from people. Ive also given presents that were bought in poundshops and second hand stuff mixed in with some new stuff.

A short dated choc orange and !!!! all else, is just tight, particularly when the OP and her partner put down a sizeable sum of cash as a deposit due to staying with the in laws. It is the lack of thought.

If someone gave me a bunch of flowers from aldi Id be happy with it.

But when you've been able to save shed loads (thousands) due to staying with said in laws (as the OP and her partner did) and you regift a short dated choc orange for someone's 30th, you do look tight. You'd be better giving a card and saying, look money is really short just now, when we have a spare few quid, lets do x or y.

And the lack of thought is incredible, it just screams we don't give a hoot about you.

Ah, yes! I used to get a coat for Christmas and glasses for my birthday, not the sole gifts but sometimes the main one and not what I would call a real treat...

For my 30th, DH bought me two packets of giant parmer violets and then he went out on an all dayer with his mates. I was 8 months pregnant at the time, obviously hormonally challenged as I thought this was fine, even dropping him off and picking his drunken self up when he couldn't be bothered to get a taxi.

10 years on, he hasn't improved. I'm 40 tomorrow and he asked the other day if I've bought myself a birthday card yet from the kids!
