Although I would have given nothing rather than re-gift a piece of chocolate, it does seem to me you are being a little harsh on the OP when all he buys her is Maltesers. That's hardly a thoughtful present either.I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

This is what I was thinking, although does BIL buy her Maltesers because he knows she likes them?
I've had my share of terrible presents, namely a 120g bar of Dairy Milk from my step-brother and 1 bottle of Magners cider from my uncle (this was when I was 15 and before I knew if I liked cider!)
I'm constantly getting Christmas presents at Easter and I can't remember the last time I got a card from some of my relatives.
My 21st birthday present was a piece of jewellery that I got to design (one of my relatives is a jeweller). Unfortunately I sent designs of what I wanted to him not long after my birthday and heard nothing back. Fast forward to my 22nd birthday and he takes a necklace out of one of the display cases in his shop and gives it to me as my present for that year. I wasn't happy about it as it was meant to be for my significant birthday and it wasn't even what I designed, which was the whole point. Our Rainbow Twins born 17th April 2016
