You should have bought nothing. Giving him a chocolate orange is an insult.

Agreed - you can get a well chosen, thoughtful gift for very little money - even a voucher for his favourite shop. To me, it is less about how much you spent and more about how little thought you put into his gift.

    OMG your husband is tight!

I'm one of 5 plus we have a cousin who is like a sibling as his parents died. The way it's spaced there's always a big birthday between is and our parents/grandparents.

For my sisters 30th a few years ago I took £30 to travelex and bought her lira for Her holiday, chucked it in a card and wrote that the should have a drink on me (turns out she had a few dinners - life in Turkey is cheap).

For my brothers birthday I went to a book signing at waterstones years ago (his birthday was December) and got Jeff Lindsay to sign a copy of the first Dexter book - cost me the price of the book and I got my own book signed at the time. That book was wrapped in cling film and stored away until December and now has pride of place on my brothers book shelf. He thanked me for the book the. Opened the cover and there was the message "happy 30th birthday X from Jeff Lindsay" then he got all emotional and stuff but it was just a book - a book with a bit of thought behind it.

I've already got my little brothers 30th planned out and I'm not even 30 yet! Little sisters not long had her 21st and I'm currently psuing a small fortune for her wedding cake so she will have to wait for me to see something and think it up.

My family aren't rich, we don't expect big presents. The first present I ever received that cost over £150 was an iPad my mum and dad bought me when I was hospitalised needing a heart transplant. They saw that I was bored and they brought me that in with songs and games and a SIM card for Internet access all pre loaded and ready to go. I would be seriously hurt if my 30th birthday present was clearly something that wasn't thought about.

Ive never thought particularly that birthdays that end in a zero should have more importance attached to them than any other.

Maybe if I make it to 100 I might change my mind on that.

This is as sad as my bil/sil/mil/fil all clubbing together to get my son £1 thinsulate hat for his 10th birthday:o

Atleast the chocolate orange cost more than that, even if it was regifted ;)
No one said it was gonna be easy!

I'm hoping I get something a bit more than some re-gifted chocolate for my birthday tomorrow! The psycho-toddler is still awake at 11pm as she is beyond excited - I think she is expecting a party with balloons, an entertainer and party bags. Not very likely at age 48 :rotfl:

pretty sure I didn't even get a card from most of my siblings for my 30th. I got my sister a dressing gown. I think she got me some m&s sweets and cakes. I honestly see no problem with a chocolate orange if that's how your families work!

I once got my sister in law anti-wrinkle cream for Christmas, now I'm thinking maybe the chocolate orange re gifting idea may have gone down slightly better! Always next year! ;)
