    UPDATE....

I've now switched to Sky for my broadband and telephone. Apart from shouting down the phone to some bloke in Bangalore, it seemed to go smoothly (so far).

Will keep my fingers crossed that it works out ok. Saves me £16 a month to Toucan (just under £200 a year). Not bad for one phone call...

Ok looks as though it is better than 50/50 chance that a smooth transfer can be arranged to Sky combined package.

How much advance notice did you give them/did they need?

Manrow - I spoke to them today. They said the wireless rooter and other stuff should be with me within 5 working days (without taking into account postal strike delays!). You then have to phone your existing provider to get a MAC code to give to Sky, which again can take a few days to arrive (my provider is e-mailing it to me)

Apparently you then get a 'go-live' date when sky takes over from your existing provider. All seems straightforward so far, but as we all know, these things can go wrong!

Pl can you tell me step by step what you did. I am with btyahoo now and paying £15 a month on special offer. I want to cancel when the contract runs out. Do I ring sky first and told them I want to be with them, I do not want their sky talk as I am better with bt as I use 18185. At what stage do you contact bt to ask for a mac code? I am also a bit conerned with the wireless router how do you make it secure? Thanks

    hi loulou,

I was paying about the same as you per month with toucan. i would suggest checking first that you are not still under contract. If not, just phone sky and tell them what package you want. They then process the order over the phone there and then. you will then need to phone btyahoo and get your mac code. it will be e-mailed to you probably in about 48 hours. when it arrives, just phone sky and pass it on to them.

this is as far as i have got so far (postal strike and all that) but so far it all pretty smooth. 'fraid I can't help you with wireless rooter questions - far too technical for my small brain!!

I recently rang Sky to enquire about their broadband service as I wanted the 2mb basic package they offer.

They did a check on my phone number and said that they only have the 8mb option which is £17 / month.

I don't want this option so my logic was that if they can offer me 8mb then surely the line is capable of offering 2mb?

They disagreed and said that only 8mb is available in my area.

I told them I'd get back to them, but is this a con to get me to fork out an extra £17 / month.

Your local telephone exchange needs to be 'LLU enabled' for you to receive the base/mid/max broadband packages that Sky offer.

I'm presuming Sky have done the line check and found out your local exchange isn't 'LLU enabled' so then they've offered you their 'Sky Connect' broadband service, which as you've found out, is alot more expensive.

Might be worth giving BT a buzz and asking when/if your local exchange will become 'LLU enabled'. You never know, it might be sooner rather than later.
  • Here's the dilemma

Go with Sky TV / speak / surf but needing Sky connect as broadband route (in process of trying to reduce cost of this as initially wanting to charge me £38 all in per month instead of initial £26 thought the offer would be)

or just cut losses and go with freesat sky deal of £75 one off payment and after 6 mths just stick with in effect freeview channels (as I understand it).

(was hoping to get the Sky plus box tho and dont think can get this on latter of above.)

Questions arise which I will say here but also post on internet access forum

    1. What is the Sky broadband service like esp when on connect?

    2. Has anyone transferred from tiscali to this and is so was it a hassle?

    3. What sort of speed of broadband should I expect and is the connection consistant etc?

In theory I am told that the full broadband service should be available in the new year but due to general slow delivery of these 'better' services (still cant get channel 5 or freeview where I live!) I ave my doubts hence would be stuck with connect for the full year.

I hope that makes sense but struggling to just pick out the answers from all the many listings before me.

Many thanks if you can help.
If only I could stop finding good bargains on this site, I would save a fortune! :rotfl:
