You can use ready made products such as jar sauces as long as you include them in your daily syns. You can have 5-15 syns a day.
A jar of Dolmio sauce has about 9-11 syns for a 500g jar or 13-16 for a 750g jar. This is for tomato based sauces, creamy ones are more, e.g. 25+. If there are 4 people sharing the sauce, then you take a quarter of the syns.
We sometimes have a pasta bake made from a jar. My husband is not a good cook and this is one of the meals that he can make and that my children enjoy. So if I have this meal, I add 6.5 syns to my food diary (roughly a quarter of the total syns of 25.5 for creamy tomato pasta sauce) and also have a healthy A choice for the cheese topping.
If I make my own sauce, then the whole meal is free, as I can use tomatoes, passata, onions, spices without any syns but sometimes it's good to have a night off the cooking.
Thanks for replying. Just wanted to check. I know my Mam did slimming world years ago when i still lived at home and i can't remember her ever making sauces from scratch as i used to make most meals once i finished school for them coming in from work, but thought it might of changed since then. I would happily make everything from scratch but OH is just so fussy with sauces and i also have an incredibly fussy 2 year old!
Really hoping it works for me. I have tried just about everything going. My Mam lost around 3 stone i think back when she did it so i know it can work.0 -
I make my own tomato sauce, and it tastes better than the bought varieties, and it has no sugar and preservatives!
Base = Pasata, Double tomato pure, herbs, maybe some tomatoes
For a chilli I would add stock, beans and chilli for example
I can make a variety of dishes from my base: bolognese, sea food, chilli con carne.
You can use jars, but you must Syn them in your plan.
I would quite happily make things from scratch but OH just won't eat them. I did try making my own pasta sauce a couple of months back but OH and one of the kids wouldn't touch it. I prefer the Jar sauces but i would happily make my own if i didn't have fussy eaters to cater for as well.0 -
I'm having yet another EE day today:
B - porridge; Mullerlight; grapes
L - HM pepper & lentil soup (used HM chicken stock)
D - garlic & balsamic chicken. Not sure what to serve with it but probably mash, as we had rice last night. Think I'll also add some asparagus to give it a bit of colour and some extra SF (there's garlic, onions & mushrooms in it)
HEA - milk
HEB - porridge
Syns - cornflour 1; not sure what else but probably a Viscount biscuit 3.5

An addition to my menu! DH has asked for razor clams for starter this evening so that will up the syns a bit as will need to add some white wine when cooking them. No doubt we'll end up drinking a glass or two as well!

I think part of the problem is that jar sauces have so much sugar in them that when you make the sauces yourself they're not as sweet. There is talk that SW are going to start doing jar sauces, following on from the range of ready meals they have at Iceland.

Minus 3 for me last nite
Just gotta keep that going now!0 -
Daisy - we go away to Corfu at end of August - also stupidly excited. I've not worn a bikini for years, hoping this is the year I finally do it, am hoping I've given myself enough time. There's people I work with who have done C25K, I couldn't even manage Day 1 when I tried, ended up puffing and panting with a beetroot red face! When I've lost my first stone I may give it another go though.
Bexta - I'm like you and used to rely heavily on jar sauces, I'm attempting my first curry on friday though without a jar of Uncle Bens, praying for some kind of miracle that it'll turn out edibleGood Luck if you decide to give it all a go
Today's EE food is / will be:
B - shreddies (heb) and banana, cups of tea (hea)
L - mugshot (i'm addicted to these things) and ham with salad to have later in afternoon
T - crispy chicken (7 syns), SW chips, mushy peas
Hmm not much speed food in there apart from salad, I've got fruit to snack on and will probably have some broccoli or green beans with my syn-ful chicken
Have a fab day everyone0 -
Jar sauces, you could make them work but I don't really see the point as they're a lot of syns. If the kids and husband won't eat them you could make yours seperately and freeze the rest?
Seems a waste of syns to me, but you could probably knock up an equivalent to Dolmio, use some fat free yoghurt for a bit of creaminess or something.0 -
After some advice as would like to start slimming world but i am unsure if its for me really. Everyone post or forum i have had a read through all state about making your own pasta/curry sauces etc. We always use jar sauces here. Have tried making my own sauces in the past but they have never gone down well. I love them but OH just hates them. I'm ok at currys but i make the sauces out of a proper curry recipe book. Can you do slimming world if you use jar sauces? We usually use ragu or dolmio for pasta and pataks for curry. Uncle bens for sweet and sour and sweet thai chilli.
I used jars of pasta sauce for pretty much the same reason as my bf is the fussiest person I've ever met (well except his mother she's even worse!) I just work them in to my syns as the other's have said - though sometimes it means foregoing a slice of garlic bread or other treat I don't mind as it's much easier cooking one main.
I suppose I'm also lucky that our little one (one in a week!) will eat anything and everything and bf is often away so I can indulge my love of cooking (and syn free sauces) at those times!
I ended up with a few chocolate syns yesterday but can't have been more than 6 and I did have a HeB in the end (wholemeal roll, 55g so just under the 60g listed)
I am being a bit naughty and syn-banking this week as we are off to the caravan on Friday just after lunch so we will likely have a Chinese or pizza on Friday and Saturday night!
Today:
Breakfast: tea (milk from HeA) and fruit salad (Satsuma, apple, melon and kiwi)
Lunch: pasta salad (3 tbsp. 'soup' pasta - small shells) with lettuce, cherry tomato, cucumber, beetroot, hard boiled egg, some sweetcorn and peas leftover from tea last night and tuna.
I made sme jelly pots up yesterday (hartleys sugar free, orange - the ones where you get a pair of sachets) I think it's 1.5 for the whole sachet and I made 6 pots so I make that 0.25 syn...I'll round that up to 0.5 to make keeping track easier in my head!
Tea: hmm no idea yet as I forgot to lift anything out of the freezerwill have to sort that one with bf asap! That said I think he will be happy with chicken dippers and chips n which case I will probably end up having a tin of spaghetti from the cupboard (free) or a small jacket potato, tuna and salad

Denise
If I use a sweetener I use a product called Truvia
It looks a little more expensive, but one uses a third of a teaspoon, instead of a whole teaspoon for the same sweetness.
It is also better on the hips.SW loss= 15.5kg / 2st 6.2lb0 -

I do think it is a big step to come off jarred sauces, as Denise says they are full of sugar so the taste would be different. The value jars are actually better for you (i.e. less sugar) and cheaper, i think they did the study on that Greg Wallace programme.. could you swap to those ones? Think the basics ones are about 8 syns...
The pataks jar sauces are between 20-30 syns, but the pastes are a lot less, might be worth swapping ot them. Again the supermarkets own brand are slightly less syns.
Would you buy some of the SW ready meals and cook a separate dinner for the rest of the family - then you'd only have to ping yours in the microwave and it would be free? The kids might be curious enough to try it and then you could cook it from scratch with the recipe on the boxkids are curious things and always want what they can't have
unfortunately, all the meat should have all visible fat removed, but again if you want to syn it then there's nothing stopping you.
Feel free to list the sauces you use and we can syn them for you or offer some lower syn suggestions.
lantanna - good loss :T well done..
