Jock has told you about the amount of cheese you can have. Olive oil used to be a HEB but unfortunately it isn't any more so it is 6 syns for 1 Tbs! So if you wanted to use all your syns on it you could have 2.5Tbs, but of course that means you wouldn't be able to have any other things at all which I don't think is sustainable.

For example, how would you thicken a sauce? The easiest way is with cornflour which you would have to syn at 1 syn per Tbs; a Tbs of sauce another syn.

If you like the odd glass or wine that would be another 6 syns (175ml glass).

I find if you put your oil in a spray bottle it goes a lot further, I only need a couple of sprays for most things, much better than the glugs I used to pour.

  • Good morning all :) The slimming world website won't let me log on so looking for a little help with syns. I bought myself a Ninja Nutri (like a Nutribullet) yesterday. Made myself a lovely smoothie this morning using kale, celery, blueberries, orange and apple. I know the veg are free and I need to syn the fruit, but the bit I'm unsure of is the syn value of the fruit. Is it the usual 1 syn for 20 kcal or does the fruit get a lower syn value since it's a free food starting out?

Crabapple I managed to lose a lot of weight and kept it off for two years on a low carb (medium protein) diet, as a vegetarian with a bit of fish thrown in (pulling faces)! The EESP looks like it has a lot more stuff I can eat, all those beans, chick peas and lentils, the only concern I have is the very low fat content. How much olive oil can I have with 15 syns? And how much cheese in the Healthy Extras? If I can have these two foods plus all in the list I should be SORTED!

My challenge is to eliminate cakey things, biscuits and generally all sugar content. That has become my downfall and my go-to comfort food, which inevitably leads to binges because of the blood sugar crashes.

When I had eliminated all starchy and sugary foods (but still ate a decent amount of carbs in vegetables) my blood sugar was much more stable, but I would not like to go back to that way of eating because I am concerned about too much fat.

Off to search Woman's Own now!

If low carb works for you then that's all good, but SW don't recommend EESP long term. All the beans/lentils etc are free and still good sources of protein on EE (and Green) as well and there is no obligation to eat unlimited pasta/rice/potatoes, it just allows you to when you want :)

    Thank you Joedenise and Crabapple

That's my biggest worry, the need to keep the plan very low fat, it is what made me fail in diets before, but 2 and a half Tbsps olive oil might be ok on one day, if I did not have other stuff.

Re. Thickening sauces, I don't make many sauces, I can always use mashed potato or beans to thicken, or pur!ed veg, or cooked red lentils, it is not something I would worry about.

Ok this is how I would eat normally, a typical day but adjusted to fit the plan, is it ok?

Breakfast: 2 poached eggs, homemade baked beans (minimal sugar, no fat), saut!ed mushrooms in non stick pan.

Lunch: lentil, spinach and tomato soup with ryvita, mixed salad with 1/2 Tbsp oil, 1 piece of fruit

Snack: fat free yogurt (or natural soya yogurt) with fruit

Dinner: vege sausages with mashed swede and potato (1 tbsp oil) mountain of steamed greens and veg dressed with 1 tbsp olive oil, 40g reduced fat cheese with an apple or pear.

Does it sound ok? I can work on a variation of this for dinners, with casseroles etc. made with soya meat substitutes, or beans, or chick peas.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
  • Mmm SW Pulled Pork is nice, I've had it a couple of times. Are you making it in the slow cooker as the house stinks of garlic while it's cooking, but it is lovely.

Great idea Meg - now why didn't I think of that! I've got a nearly empty Frylight bottle so will give that a good wash out and refill it with oil.

Ok this is how I would eat normally, a typical day but adjusted to fit the plan, is it ok?

Breakfast: 2 poached eggs, homemade baked beans (minimal sugar, no fat), saut!ed mushrooms in non stick pan. When I make HM baked beans I usually syn at 0.5 per 100g. As beans & eggs are protein you would need as many mushrooms as you have of those; or you could add some tomatoes

Lunch: lentil, spinach and tomato soup with ryvita Depending on which Ryvita you have you can have 3 or 4 for HEB, mixed salad with 1/2 Tbsp oil, 1 piece of fruit Have you considered using balsamic vinegar instead of oil on your salad? That's what I use and it saves 3 syns!

Snack: fat free yogurt (or natural soya yogurt) with fruit

Dinner: vege sausages Depending on what sausages these are they would probably have syns in them. If you let us know which ones they are someone will look up the syns for them (they range from 0.5 to 3 each with mashed swede and potato (1 tbsp oil 6 syns) mountain of steamed greens and veg dressed with 1 tbsp olive oil, 40g reduced fat cheese (HEA) with an apple or pear.

Does it sound ok? I can work on a variation of this for dinners, with casseroles etc. made with soya meat substitutes, or beans, or chick peas.

I've made some comments in Red above.

So in total you would have your HEA (cheese)HEB Ryvita; oil 15 syns plus syns for sausages. If you were doing a Green day you could also have another HEA and HEB.

Not sure about EESP as potato is only a Free food and not a Speed food and you're only supposed to have occasional free food (it's better not to have any Free food as it increases weight loss). I don't do EESP as I'm at target so generally stick to EE or Green days.

Hope the above helps. If there is anything which isn't clear just post again.

Thank you, wow it gets complicated!

Re. Oil (my main concern), I love balsamic but it is sugar loaded! Also if I eat veg and salad containing fat soluble vitamins they would not be absorbed quite as readily in the absence of a small amount of fat.

For the rest, I think I might have to experiment a bit with the HEs! Very different from the dark ages of plain Red or Green days, big learning curve! Thanks again for all the help you all gave me, it is lovely to have such a bunch of knowledgeable friends! I hope in the future to be able to help too.

Edited to add: no quorn for me but I eat MrT or MrS own brand vege stuff, sausages, meatballs etc. happy to explore alternatives and Linda Mac as well, whatever works and has less syns.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).
