  • Hi guys,

I've been MIA for a bit, I've been reading but not really had chance to sit down and write! Tam, I've also been toying with the idea of getting a doppler, mostly so DH can hear bubs as he hasn't yet (I only had it checked at my 16w midwife appt last week, he wasn't there to hear it :() as I think he's struggling to connect with baby - he sees what it's doing to me though (still making me sick, nauseous, lost my appetite, tired, dizzy, spotty, constipated etc.!!!) so I'm not sure he's seeing the good side?!

I'm 17w tomorrow, and I've been feeling little flutters that I haven't been quite sure of for the last week or so, but today after lunch I'm pretty certain it was baby movement!

I've had my risk assessments at work for the 2 departments I work in, and have been told I'm not allowed to work alone, which is easier said than done in the NHS!! So I've been lugging heavy x-ray equipment around, doing lots of bending, & working 12hr shifts (shifts are my choice, at least it's only 3 days then the other 2 can be spent in bed!!) so feeling pretty achey & tired.

Frozenpenguin - are you off to the Baby Show at Sandown Park this weekend? DH & I are heading there on Saturday, we booked & paid for tickets then frustratingly the next day I got a complimentary pair through the post from Emmas Diary! My in laws are going to come with us now, which should be nice as they currently live nearly 200miles away, so will be nice for them to have a part in baby prep. It also means DH will have his dad to disappear to the bar to if he gets fed up!!

I'm getting ridiculously impatient waiting for my 20 week scan, as I'm desperate to find out what baby is!! One of the doctors at work said he'd scan me to find out, but as DH wouldn't be with me (and our workplaces are in opposite directions from where we live) I really didn't think I should, but it's SOOOOO tempting!!!

  • Afternoon all :)
Hope everyone has had a good week. I've been in the lab all week (doesn't happen much any more!) and am so tired, really stiff and achy. I dragged myself to Pilates last night to try and stretch everything out as my back is really bothering me, but it doesn't seem to have helped much. We've got several more big experiments to run this year so am going to have to look at how we plan/schedule them so I can get regular breaks through the day.

I can't believe I'm 24 weeks tomorrow! Only 16 weeks to go, eek. There's no hiding the bump now.

I'm soooo tired though, I went to bed at 8.30 last night. Still knackered now though. Feel really useless, OH is writing his dissertation and I'm struggling to even make us dinner, housework has gone out the window, and as for sorting the new kitchen - forget it!

Urgh. I'm still tired despite early nights and a bit of a lie in this morning. I'm finding I'm waking up between 3 and 5 every night for an hour or so. And I wake up every time I turn over.

It making me feel down, because I'm so tried. And combined with the hormones I'm snappy and anxious and a bit meh, not depressed as such, just a bit blue, things which wouldn't normally bother me are doing. I think I just need a hig and a good nights sleep. Off to friends to watch the rugby tonight which might be good for me.

Sorry to be a grump, rant over now.

On a positive we have made tile, paint and wall paper decisions for our kitchen. This is a BIG deal for us, we never agree on anything decorating related!
  • Hope you feel better soon Rambosmum, I managed to nap while I had guests round today - oops! Still really tired, looking forward to this energetic stage I keep being promised. House hunting has been a flop, think I might need to widen my search area which will be more of a pain/ cost travel wise but might mean a better house for our money. Not getting far where we live. Would rather not stay in the 1 bed flat but might be the case.

I'm also having really broken sleep, waking around 2am and unable to get back to sleep for an hour or two. I look like a Zombie!

Still undecided on prams. bump getting HUGE!

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Hi Rambosmum, we live in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, not too far from Geneva. It's very quiet and beautiful, but a bit boring I find! The medical care is good though, I've had routine scans at 7, 12, 16 and 20 weeks and have another tomorrow at 24 weeks. At the last one they switched it to 3D mode, so we got pictures of his face (looks just like a baby, amazing, haha!!), which was nice and unexpected. The whole thing is in French though and sometimes I find myself searching for a word as I wasn't very familiar with medical terminology in French before.

I felt nauseous all weekend, which rendered me less active than I'd planned to be. To be honest, I have found it quite difficult to cope with the continuous sickness and nausea, which started at week 5 and is still with me. I've had moments of panic where I've been worried that it won't go away even when the baby is born and that I'll have it for the rest of my life. I know this is ridiculous, but when I feel low, my thoughts get the better of me! My aunt had it for the full 9 months with all four of her pregnancies, so it seems I might be following her :(

    Have a good week people!

Morning all, hope everyone had a nice weekend :) We took advantage of the lovely weather to go to the zoo on Saturday (we have annual passes so we're trying to go whenever we don't have plans and weather is nice!) and we didn't take the pushchair in as we're trying to stop using it with DD so she doesn't feel ousted when we need to use it for the new baby. She's nearly 3, and did a good amount of walking on Saturday which was great. We also went to a local model train society open day on Sunday with some friends and their little boy so we were pretty busy :)

I had a resurgence of morning sickness over the weekend, boo :( I remember it happening with DD too, around this stage, I wonder if there's a growth spurt at 16 weeks or something. Sorry you're still suffering TopQuark, I hope you get a bit of let up soon. I had it throughout with my DD, but after 16 weeks or so it was only sporadic not every day.

I've also started getting insomnia, which again I had last time constantly from 20 weeks onwards, I used to get up and go and watch tv in the middle of the night as I was so fed up of lying in bed listening to DH snore! Got through a lot of box sets. This time I'm so tired I think my body is fighting it as I'm not fully awake, but aware of not being asleep (If that makes sense!). Hoping it doesn't kick in properly yet, I still feel like a zombie almost all the time as it is!

  • Topquark and rambosmum, sorry to hear your both a bit down with nausea and/or tiredness. I can relate to the tiredness. Another here who wakes between 2-4 and it takes me ages to get back to sleep after the third toilet break of the night, or the drink of water to de-laminate my mouth as my nose is still blocked at night. Urgh! I cant make it past 9 most evenings, which is a bit sad, but beyond caring now.

Sweetielemon, hope you find somewehere and get settled before baby. Are you buying or rented?

Laura-hoggle, I have a doppler and as OH cant feel baby due to anterior placenta and my belly padding, it has been great for him to hear the heartbeat. He listens probably once every couple of weeks for less than a minute, and you can hear the baby move around loads (sounds like a wobble board), which is nice. We dont use it for reassurance though, and contact the midwife for any concerns rather than using the doppler to check all is OK, as the midwives are the ones who can tell a distressed heartbeat from a normal one. I got the angelsounds one from amazon for about £20 I think.

Off to the baby event at mothercare tomorrow night. Hoping that the 10% voucher covers furniture as this is where we are getting ours from. If not, I will still go armed with my list and see what we can get.

Feeling lots of kicks in the last few days, mostly in the morning and early evening. OH still cant feel them yet though which is a shame.

Have a GP appointment this week, and need to ask for a fit to fly letter as we are off to Iceland next week! Cant wait! Already checked and I can go in the hot springs but mostly standing up an not fully submerged for hours, but better than nothing. So looking forward to it.

Also, the loft is done! The box room is mostly empty except for the bits we have bought. All ready to start decorating on the weekend. Cant wait.

Question - anyone planning on using baby sleeping bags? If so, what tog are you getting and how many do you think we need. I have one in 2.5 tog. I want to get a 1 tog one, but not sure if two is enough. Also slings, any tips of advice? I want a cloth type one, and OH says he would prefer a more robust looking one with all the straps and things. I am hoping they have these at the mothercare event as I have no idea where to start.

Devildolly - yes to sleeping bags, probably the best baby invention ever! We had 2 each in 2.5 and 1 tog for DD, in case of sick/nappy leaks in the middle of the night! As baby due in the winter, I'd buy 2.5 only and see how you get on, you might not need 1 tog in 0-6 months. I think ours were 6-18 months and DD was born in late November.

Slings - so much choice, but I wouldn't get one from Mothercare - they mostly just have the baby bjorn style which aren't great for baby's hips or your back, and the pouch sling ones which can be difficult to use safely. See if you have a local sling library where you can try them out, as different styles suit different people, and the volunteers will be really knowledgable. We got our carrier at a baby expo where we could try lots at the same time. We have a stretchy wrap (great for newborns) and a Connecta (soft carrier with buckled straps) and really liked both. We used the connecta until after DD was 2 so a good buy for us.
