Awkward Decison to Make

With no contact for 27 years how can you possibly know his character?
I'm friends with him on Facebook and have followed what is going on in his life for a few years. By no contact I meant not actually seeing him in person but we have exchanged messages from time to time. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

That's okay then as everything on Facebook is real.

Yes but mainly I see his chat with friends and he talks about himself to them. Its not addressed to me so I can see what he is like.
He knows he has not managed his money well but he wants to get himself straight. There is a shortage of lorry drivers in this country so when he gets his class 1 he will be in demand and will be able to manage better. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I do realise that all you doubters are only trying to look out for me by the way.The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Indeed and mostly because of your opening sentence
"I was contacted today by a nephew who I have had no contact with for 27 years."
Which is not true.
I suppose so. I wasn't intentionally lying - I didn't think the occasional message on Facebook counted as contact. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I have forwarded the money to him and he sent me a text message asking for my bank details so he can set up a direct debit. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

There is a huge difference from "no contact" and being in touch/watching on Facebook.
Well I'm a bit old fashioned and don't consider Facebook as proper contact. However, I've just realised that is why I feel so confident about lending the money because I have learned so much about his life and who he is from being nosey on Facebook. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -
I lost contact with my neices and nephews for many years following a family fued that didnt really impact our direct situation but the upshot was we lost contact for 20 years.
I am now facebook friends with 2 of them and over the past 3 years we have slowly rebuilt a relationship...having said that I wouldnt lend them money or act as guarantor....I simply dont want to sour what we have by the possibilty of repayment not being made.
OP if you are in a position to lend the money and write it off if its not repaid then Yes go ahead....but if not then politely decline.
You can be sympathetic to your newphews needs but it doesnt mean that you should bail him out unless it is an amount you can truly afford to lose.
Think very carefully before you get involved...it is perfectly reasonable to say no ...and if that causes tension or offence with your nephew then so be it.frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
