Garmin nüvi 55LMT -Opinions please.

The only real difference between the 55 and 65 is the size, and, having used my 55 for a while, I really don't think the extra inch would make any appreciable difference.

As they say, it's not the size that matters, so much as what you do with it.

Has anyone tried using their Satnav in Portrait Orientation?

I've just tried it on a short run, and I think I prefer it to Landscape.

In particular, I think having Lane Assist up top, instead of alongside the map, makes it easier to understand at a glance.

I am a Garmin owner and would like to add that Garmin provide a software called BaseCamp which can be used to pre-plan journeys. It can then be used to upload the journey to the satnav. Journeys planned this way will appear in the Apps > Trip Planner section on your Garmin.

I am very impressed by the PC software Garmin provide, both Garmin Express (for updates to firmware maps etc) and BaseCamp for planning.

Also to use BaseCamp effectively you need install the maps available for you device locally, do this using Garmin Express go to Reinstall Maps, Advanced Options and choose Computer Only.

Finally I'll mention Garmin POI Loader, which allows you to load custom points of interest into the Garmin so you can find them when you use the onboard search. This can also be used to setup custom alerts, like accident blackspots. This is a bit more technically involved, search google for help on custom POI files.

Not all Garmin sat navs let you do this. I can't with mine.

How do you you find it ? Easy to use etc

I'm looking for a new sat nav and noticed Halfords have the 56 LM EU for £100, http://www.halfords.com/sat-nav-audio/sat-nav/car-sat-nav/garmin-nuvi-56-lm-eu-5-sat-nav

I upgraded to the LM55 from an older Garmin.

Love it. Very clear display, quick, good size, etc, etc.

Not sure what the upgrades are to the 56 though - i assume its the new model of the 55?

The "up ahead" function looks good and useful

Yes, it gives good notice. plus major junctions it displays what lane you should be in and / or a generated view of what the junction looks like
