They have the cheapest fuel in Calais - certainly the cheapest filling station anywhere on your route.
But yes they do have a lovely selection of fresh bread, cheese, and cold meats, perfect for picnics.
And toilets too. lol :rotfl:0 -
What surprised me was, the fuel price was almost exactly the same numbers as in the UK, but in Euros instead of £s, making it ~ 30% cheaper.
Talk about Rip Off Britain.
I can see why lorry drivers nip over to France to fill up.0 -
What surprised me is the motorways are free in the UK while they cost a fortune in France.
Talk about Ripoff France.0 -

You'll find that for just about everything in Europe.
The only thing cheaper in the UK is cornflakes.0 -

If I travel across France I pay more in tolls than I do in diesel. You can avoid the motorways but it takes ages to get anywhere. Would you avoid motorways in the UK?
Anyone that thinks the UK is expensive has obviously never been to Denmark.0 -

They are not all toll roads.
For example from Calais heading north to Dunkirk and Lille is free.
You just need to be carefull and look out for the word PEAGE - pronouced 'payadge'0 -
Can I tell the Sat Nav to keep me off the toll roads?
Also, how do you pay the toll?
Are there toll booths, or is it done electronically?0 -

In order:
Yes - you set up preferences/avoidances on the Sat Nav very easy - so you don't use toll roads - I only do that for Slovenia.
All tolls can be paid by credit card - just be sure you follow MSE advice and have a credit card that doesn't charge extra for transactions in € - I use the Post Office Credit Card and keep it only for European trips.
Yes there are toll booths - it's only necessary /compulsory in some countries that trucks to have the electronic gizmos.
BUT - going from Calais to Berlin via Antwerp there are NO tolls at all.0 -
When you see the state of the road surface on some of the Belgian motorways you may be glad to pay for the French ones.0
