I'm learning a lot, by just playing with it.
OK you lot, stop giggling.
For instance, I din't realise you could change the category a favourite is stored in, let alone create your own categories.
Have to say, it'd be so much easier, if other countries had a narrow postcode system, like the UK.0 -
In the Garmin Express app you will see at the top 3 sections -
updates - device - extras
In the device section you have the option to backup all your personal info.
One problem that i encountered was that favourites that I had deleted came back automatically.
The solution was to be brave and delete the backups then perform a new 'backup now'
Too many favourites and lengthy custom routes had slowed up the performance of the device.
Best to review your favourites every few months.
I had over 5 years worth and occasionally got the message 'route memory full'.
Using a bigger SD card didn't help as it was the info on the device itself that was choked up.
Fit the maximum size of SD that your device can handle and that speeds up the route calculations, and searches.
With all the playing and discoveries you are making - I'll be asking you for help soon.
I'm very happy with how my 6 year old Garmin Nuvi is performing - I get new / updated maps every 3 months or so and the European coverage is increasing every time.
Still only main roads and major cities in some far-flung countries on the edge of Europe though.
I've had no problems with foreign post-codes.0 -

That'll be the day.I've had no problems with foreign post-codes.
It's not so much the postcodes themselves, as the fact it offers you several addresses, especially if it's somewhere which doesn't have a house number.
For example, earlier I was looking for the Möhne Dam.
Someone gave me
Möhne Reservoir, 59519 Möhnesee, Germany.
I entered 59519, but when I typed "Möhnesee", it didn't recognise it, and instead offered Mohnestraße, Mohnetal or Mohneufer.
Likewise, looking for the Calais Ferry port, I entered 62100, and it gave two options, a mile apart.
For Dover Ferry port, I entered CT16 1JA, and it gave me just one option, which was the Inward Car Lanes.
BTW. According to my Satnav, Carrefour isn't anything like the nearest filling station to Calais Ferry port.
Apparently, there are five closer ones.0 -
OK - I understand now what you mean about the postcodes.
To clarify on the Calais filling stations -
If you are heading out of Calais in the direction of Dunkirk on the Autoroute or St Omer on the RN the huge Carrefour hypermarche just off Rue Yervant Toumaniantz is the only one I can guarantee to be open 24hrs for fuel. It's right next to the Generale d'Optique on the google map I've linked to.
On the other side of the motorway you will find the Total station I mentioned earlier, and various cut-price wine warehouses in the Marcel Doret ZI, like Pidou for example.

I am well aware that there are several other filling stations nearer to the docks, but they are not on the main road through, and involve passing side streets etc.
I've also just checked for the nearest filling stations to Calais Docks and yes there are 5 nearer than the Carrefour I'm referring to - but they all close at night as far as I know.0 -
I remember on the way back to Calais, we stopped at a large store/warehouse type thing, which sold tobacco products, then, a few miles down the road, a similar place consisting of two buildings, one selling booze, and the other chocolates.0

Most of the British tour buses and coaches stop there, at Pidou, as the drivers get a 'special rate' for bringing in the extra customers.
The prices are not that great as the supermarkets are cheaper.
But many Brits are just looking for their favourite brands of UK ciggies and beer which only the warehouses stock.
It is much cheaper to purchase all your chocolate, wine and assorted booze as far away from Calais as possible.
I often pass through Luxembourg on the way home and the prices there are amazing. The steep hill up and away from the River Meuse in Remich for example is an old favourite stopping place with many long distance travellers - the cheapest fuel in mainland EU (currently 77p/litre) and the filling stations even have trolleys for buying your cigs, beer and wine.
Picnic beside the river - bread, cheese, salami, and sparkling local wine for €1.50 a bottle - paradise.0 -

the Total station is open 24/24 as it's a major stop for truckers; I filled up there 2 weeks ago, diesel was 91p a litre :-)The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Just got an Air Vent Mount.
A bit pricey. :eek:0 -

If I enter a name of some establishment (eg. "Tesco"), it only lists such establishments which are close to my HA.
Have I accidentally set something (and, if so, how do I unset it?), or is this how it is meant to operate? As far as I can remember on my Garmin it looks for establishments near where the device is. So if you are at home it will search near your home. You scroll down the list to see establishments further away but there will be a distance limit.
Update on this. There is a way.
Starting with Where To?
In the top RH corner, there's a box which says "Searching near:" with your locality in it.
Touch this box and a "Search Near" screen appears.
Only some options are available.
Choose one of the available options, eg. "Favourite", and choose a location.
You now go back to the Go Home, Address, Restaurants, etc. screen.
Touch one of these, and it shows you places local to the chosen destination.
For example, selecting the Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Antwerp, then choosing Restaurants, followed by All Restaurants, gives me a list of Nico Central, Dikke Mee, Colmar, etc.0 -

Now you are showing off, Bob.
Didn't I tell you that very soon you would be telling us things that we didn't know how to do?
Well done mate - I can see that you are a serious convert. :beer:0
