  • Lucky to get 2Mb in an evening from Virgin. Over 10% increase will be checking if my line rental in advance can be refunded and how they calculated my increase.

Line rental saver - the legal stuff

£144 for 12 months' Line Rental must be paid in advance by debit/credit card. Available to new and existing customers with a Virgin Media cable phone line. Call charges apply in accordance with your tariff. Not available with other line rental offers or Home Phone talk plan offers. If you cancel Line Rental Saver within seven working days of your order you will get a full refund of your advance payment to the debit or credit card you paid with. Otherwise the advance payment is non-refundable. After 12 months, you will automatically move to standard line rental charges (currently £15.99 a month).

3rd call from virgin yesterday (missed the other two)
    offered
    xl tv
    calls anytime
    152mb broadband (was on 50)
    12 month contract
    £46.49
    £51.49 from feb onwards
    a new hub
have taken the deal , only problem is she said i would get faster broadband within minutes and i am still only getting 21mb max
  • I am waiting for my letter to come through the post and currently pay £51 + line rental so will more than likely be looking elsewhere when I find out how much mine is going up by.
  • Phoned to cancel - they offered me £10 off per month for the next 18 months (and extended the contract by 12 months). Yay.
  • Does Virgin send out a letter or email confirming date of the cancellation - I cancelled with them last week and havent had anything since?

Mind you... I've still not been sent a letter with the rate rise on it either!

Also... does the monthly TV/line rental etc paid in advance get part refunded?

I was on a phone and broadband deal from ntl days; by adding tv I got an £8 pm reduction, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered.

So how much are you paying for that now, if you don't mind me asking?

It would be useful for comparison purposes if people quoting their prices state whether or not they include line rental.

How do you access live chat? I can't seem to find it on the site.

The last couple of years, dealing with Virgin retentions has been a breeze. This year it seems like they're actively trying to get rid of us as customers. Last year the overall price decreased from the year before, with the friendly agent trying loads of different combinations to maximise the savings, but this year we're looking at an overall rise from £14.50/month to £22.50/month (if I take up the line rental saver again) for basic phone and basic 50mb broadband, and no scope for a better offer.

I suppose it's not terrible, but after years of friendly staff eager to bring costs down, this was a bit of a shock! But thinking about it, an £8/month increase overall, which breaks down as:
    - £2 increase in prepaid line rental
    - £2 reduction in maximum possible loyalty discount (from £12 to £10 - unless she was trying to fob me off)
    - £2 possible charge for a service (free 08 calls) that I was promised would be free for life but now apparently they want to charge for. This could end up being free, or I could cancel this if I wanted.

So it's an increase of £2/month over and above what I would have been paying even without their stated increment.

I'll try ringing again another day to see if I have more luck with another agent, or try the live chat if I can ever find it, but the CS has declined considerably!
  • It's interesting to see everyone comparing their bills. Wouldn't it be powerful to the consumer if someone built a website where these could all be submitted. What a comparison tool that would be! (I'm sure the providers would also take advantge of it too though!).

    Heres mine anyway:

    Premier Collection
    Talk Evenings and Weekends
    XL TV
    XL Broadband (100mb)
    HD Monthly Fee
    Additional HD Box
    TiVO
    Package Total: £56.60
    + Line rental: £15.99
    - £8 loyalty discount
    Grand Total: £64.59

If I remeber correctly, they've advised that the my increase will be £4.60'ish.

I'l thinking of cancelling but would be interested to know how my package compares to others first.

I'm on a so called "Mates Rates" package. My sister who has just moved house is now getting a better package than me at a lower price and isn't on a "Mates Rates" deal.

I phoned the Retentions dept at Virgin Media to complain that "Mates Rates" is meant to be the cheapest and is therefore just a con. Guy was pretty rude, his answer was "That's just the way the cookie crumbles"! Wouldn't give me any discount or upgrade my package.

I paid Line Rental save up until October 2015 which I will apparently lose if I leave before then so it looks like I'm stuck with them until then. After, I'm off!! Mates Rates my a**e!!
