I took one of the the so call retention offers from Virgin last night, It's not much of a savin, but have removed services I don't want and slightly improved BB (Apparently) and Tivo Box.

The Issue is though that the price I was quoted over the phone was NOT the price I was sent on the email quoting new services. Have sent in a complaint. Please check emails back from Virgin.

I contacted VM back in September to ask how much I would save if I dropped phone line and went to BB and tv only (we are on VM cable but still have original BT phone line which we could use instead...long story...)

Was told it would not save me anything but would cost me £2 MORE a week more without the phone line, as I would lost the discounts now get on the current package - if I dropped the phone line. :(

Phone-line and Broadband are historically intrinsically linked because from most providers both are fed from the same wire. The Broadband only deal from Virgin is deliberately over-priced so that people will keep the phone-line and (hopefully) use it for calls. The landline is still a revenue generator which companies don't want to encourage people to dispense with.

Seems to me the simplest way for you to save money is to cancel with BT (which will also solve your other problem of unsolicited calls from that provider which you complain of on your other thread).

How much was your price increase for? What package are you on? It's interesting they didn't offer the option to waive the price increase to me... I can only guess it's because I am out of contract (and have been for more than a year). That would have been a much more satisfactory solution though

    £4.50 per month
  • Just got the dreaded price hike letter from Virgin, £3.00 a month, There all as bad as each other.

I got the dreaded letter last month and it finally pushed me to get rid of the tv. We have upto 20mg broadband, weekend calls and xl v+, with the price increase it would push the bill to £61 per month. Been saying we would get rid of tv for a long time as we don't watch the majority of channels, only kept it for son who watches nick jr, this price increase pushed me to do it.

Got offered upto 50mg broadband, weekend calls and m tivo box for £32 per month, refused it as m is basically same as freeview and not really interested.

Sticking with up to 50mg broadband and weekend calls for £24.49 per month, big saving on £61 per month. Box gets switched off 24th December, bought a Humax freeview recorder ready for this . Already got a smart tv and ps3 for any catchup required!
  • Got my e-mail, I realise I'm paying about £40 a month so my son can watch Disney Jr all day, might as well spend the saving on DVD. Here are a few semi-insider secrets that might help with the negotiations...

    1. They can see what you watch and how much BB you use. Hence when you say you don't watch footy and I only watch Downton Abbey, they know you're lying. Same with BB, tell them you never use it and they can tell you have many GBs you used last month.
    2. Likewise they also know what BB speeds are like in your area, what your options are.
    3. They know that you probably ring up every year, have a whinge, they knock a fiver off and you stay put.

I'm going to ring them now.
  • Rang them, dumped myself down to basic TV, BB and phone for £33.99

It is good BB and we still need a phone line, we also get to keep the TIVO box. Dumped the second TV in our room, etc.

Will now get SKY and some cashback
  • OK got myself SKy for the Variety Bundle

£21 per month for 12 month contract (then £28)

    £75 bill Credit
    £120 TopCashBach

£252 for a years Sky TV less my benefits comes to £57 for a years SKY TV, or £4.75 a month and I get SKY Atlantic so I don't need to pay £15 for S5 of Game of Thrones from Blinkbox.

    So £33.99 + £4.75 a month

As I keep the Tivo Box and I used to have multiroom on VM, I can move the Tivo to our bedroom, have Sky+ downstairs, so can watch TV in my room as well for £38.74, just over half of what I was paying VM!
