What about quoting the paragraph in which the term is used, and naming bank? It may help an answer. It can mean different things in different banks and circumstances.
  • Hi

I have a direct debit for a mobile phone from my natwest current account.
I am disputing this amount with the mobile company so therefore cancelled the dd with the bank.
The bank paid this dd after cancellation and charged me £38.
I called cancelled the dd again got my charge back.
Today i went to the bank they have repeated the above and told me I cannot authorize a cancellation of direct debit to a mobile company as it is a 12 month contract and each week this will be represented to them and they will allow this to go through charging me £38 each time.

Please advise if this is correct as I have now had to close the account £38 pound out of pocket as this is apparently the only way I can stop the company requestingt he direct debit.

Please help I have no current account now.

If you have set up a DD online with the mobile company, yes it leaves them open to keep collecting...you need to stop the DD with the Mobile company online by doing it online. The bank/s have no authority to stop an online agreement. It must be done your end.
  • Hi I set it up over the telephone, I have asked the company and the bank to cancel this but neither are doing it?

    Thanks

  • I know....this can be difficult....there are certain DD,s a bank cant cancel, trust me my OH has been in a similar position... cant quite remember the term they put it under, alls I know is you have to do it with the company ...If they dont or wont comply then write to the FOS stating the facts.
  • Oh well if I cant cancel I did the right thing by closing my account then, I guess.

  • aye... he had to cancel his bank card and get issued a new one...that is the only answer to end it...because the company was quoting the card number in order to gain payment.
  • Ok thanks for your help.

They will have to get the money from me now minus the 2 bank charges they incurred along the way i reckon.

    Oh well

Well had enough! Just called the CEO office and told them not happy. They took another £38 yesterday. Had £6.?? in account (was expecting a credit yesterday)and a dd came through for £9.99. They bounced it and the money came through today . I called and said since my hubby has been working (for the last 13 months), we have not incurred one charge can we please have a refund as this is food money - they said tough !!!!.

SO told the CEO most unreasonable - and please tell me what is happening with my claim. Said she would call me back. watch this space! not holding out much luck though.
