first i'd contact the bank nicely, explain and if paypal was not authorised then the bank will possibly remove charges,
face to face is often best and i usually do things like this when the bank is crowded and i am calm and not bothered about the que behind..... the teller is, so they tend to move me swiftly to the manager.. and face to face it usually goes my way. hope you get it back :)
totally debt free:j and mortgage free too 2010
  • I need to quickly correct myself, we are awaiting the judgement of the preliminary stages of the OFT test case which should come soon. However there will be appeals.

  • Hi there,

You seem a helpful bod. I have noticed a dearth of people claiming NW credit card charges back. Is this because nobody has charges to claim back form you, or you are not accepting them? You see, I have a few of these charges I do want to reclaim.

Secondly, why can I not even get a £100 overdraft facility on my account? What possible reason is there? I have really struggled towards the end of the last couple of months, and have then been stung by those direct debit returned charges too, sending me even further into the quagmire. Is there any way I can challenge some of these charges, maybe as a goodwill thing? I don't want to push it, obviously, but I have been and am a loyal customer of over ten years standing with you.
  • With regards the first question about charges, may have to do with the OFT test case. I have seen a lot less people asking questions about NatWest Bank charges, in fact I felt a bit useless so am mainly found on the current account bit of the forum. I am found on most of the other charges sites on the web under the name "Nattie" which is the shortened version of NatWestStaffMember.

With overdrafts, they are credit scored, so many things will come into the equation, one of which will be the charges. If you are unable to stick within the existing overdraft facility then the bank will not agree to the overdraft. If you have a step account, no overdraft is permitted on the account anyway. If you are spending all the money from your wages then it would be irresponsible to give an overdraft where you would be living beyond your means. That last bit is not a comment on what may have happened in the past, by the way.
As it stands today, it is bank policy that if no error has been made with the processing of the Direct Debits that no refund is given apart from exceptional circumstances ie hospitalisation, etc, etc, but evidence of this would be required.
THe last comment you make is the one thing I read a lot. I have charges but I don't want to push my relationship with the bank. THEY charged you, the bounced things on you, they have caused problems for you and you only have to write one letter to say you don't agree that its fair. The letter will be logged with regards to bank charges, and when the judgement of the OFT test case is complete, the bank will act on that judgement.

But I am referring to a credit card. These are not affected by the OFT test case, according to this website.

When you say the letter will be logged, what do you mean? I am not looking to reclaim bank charges as of yet, although I am considering this dependent on the test case result. I am only spending to my limits because I had an emergency (Mother taken to hospital, had to commute halfway across the country to get to her) and have since been stung by a series of late charges. So I am still on catch-up and finding the extortionate £38 each time stinging me.
  • If its credit card claims, and my vision has been going for a long time, I call it the before coffee moments.
Credit card charges can be claimed and my comment was based on bank charges. It sometimes is difficult to differentiate on this site which thread is bank charges and which is credit cards. Not a criticism of my poor reading skills but it is difficult.

If you have got stung by the £38 as a result of your mother being in hospital, then it is worth a letter with regards to that and the charges incurred from it.
