Actually, no there isn't, because Three's network has become congested by people who think the same way you do and use the service in ways that were never intended. Three was the MOBILE network built for the Internet. That's mobile as in things you do whilst mobile.

It was never marketed as a way to download hundreds of gigabytes.

Where does it say in my contract that I should only tether when mobile???
  • I've had the email but not contacted three yet. Have been using tethering as my only source of internet access (live in rented accommodation so not too keen on 12 or 18 month broadband contracts) and use perhaps 20gb tethering per month.

I am now thinking of getting a chinese tablet with a sim slot and phone capabilities (Ramos k100 maybe) and simply switching the ayce sim from phone to tablet when at home. This would appear to deal with the tethering limit three are introducing.

Anyone see any potential pitfalls with this?

Depends what Three do, if they are looking to stop tethering it should be fine, however if as reported Three are closing down "The one" all you can eat plans due to not making enough on them then as they pass the minimum term Three will simply contact you and change the plan. Your current setup should work till the minimum term then you need to change plans, The sim being in a phone that is tethering or in as table won't matter in that case.

There are still "all you can eat" unlimited data plans from Three.

The difference is the tethering allowed, not the data used on the device itself.

I think you've misinterpreted the meaning of a 'mobile phone' just because you're not out walking the dog, doesn't mean your phone isn't mobile.

That's what I'm hoping. At the moment all my browsing is through a tethered tablet anyway, so if I get a new tablet with a sim slot then things can continue pretty much as before in my case.

A tablet with a sim slot could still count as tethering data, it needs to be a tablet with phone capability ie it needs to be able to make/receive cellular calls and texts to be considered mobile data.

Yep, the Ramos k100 i've been looking at seems to fit the bill as it has a phone built in. Only thing it lacks is HDMI out. I already have a chinese smartphone thast works fine with my 3 sim, so would imagine the k100 would work with it too.

Stupid!, Google Chromecast/Miracast will only see mobile data usage increase to post AYCE tethering levels lol the difference will be minimal really.

I'll be using my new Lumia 1320 that was 12 months 0% credit from Argos (my first savvy with no long term mobile contract in 15+ years) with my 30 day One Plan or any 'mobile only' AYCE plan that I'm moved too haha

You can move the goalposts corporations but you will never score against this MSE goal/gate keeper...do keep trying though, its highly entertaining ;)

Now 3 Sweden do 4G router with 60GB for £40, you can even move your landline number to a 3 sim with unlimited national and mobile calls, they even provide a landline phone with sim capabilities! Which you can plug into any electric point worldwide (roaming permitting).

3UK could learn from its little sister...check out www.tre.se using google or bing translate.
SO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe ;)
  • Hi,

I used to be on the old Contract AYCE One Plan but went to SIM only on a 12 month contract which expired recently and I *think* I am now just month to month, not sure?

I have had the text but haven't phoned them yet.

I have no landline and therefore no broadband. I have been using tethering to a laptop as my main internet source. I would say I only use between 5gb to 10gb a month, if that some months - mostly attributable to iPlayer downloads.

My question is are there any better alternatives out there or is what Three are now offering still the best I will get for my circumstances?

If I bought something like the Samsung Galaxy Note - the one which is a tablet and a phone - would that get around the restrictions? At the moment I just have the Galaxy SII and the screen on that is too small to use for general internet browsing and iPlayer downloads.

My main concern when the new limits are put in place is how will you know if you are going over the limit and what can be done to prevent racking up a huge bill - or once you've reached your limit will tethering beyond 4GB just not work?
