Offended at the language possibly but then a lot would depend on the tone in which it was said. I don't have kids so can't comment on the kids aspect of it.

However, i personally would be glad he told you he didn't like it. I have the opposite problem where hubby tries not to tell me he doesn't like something which means it gets cooked again.

Not helpful I know but a lot really does depend on the tone.

Calling a meal that was made for you by someone else "!!!!!!" is wrong, period. There is no tone of voice that would change that fact. It's intrinsically wrong, no ifs, no buts. It's disrespectful, mean and downright rude. It might be acceptable behaviour between teenage flatmates, but it's certainly not something any self-respecting adult should say to anyone, nevermind their own spouse!

He should be apologising (nah, grovelling!) to you OP, not trying to switch the blame onto you for being too "sensitive" or having somehow misinterpreted his words. Urgh...

About the swearing: yes, about the food: no. Fine if you were disappointed about him not liking it but "head in hands" is an overreaction.
  • It was probably the 3rd time I had cooked this meal, and whilst I knew it wasn't a favourite meal, I didn't think it was disliked. Hubby is quite fussy with food as are the boys. There was nothing wrong with how it was cooked, he just wasn't keen on it. Sons are 14 & 16, but also a daughter aged 8 (who had already cleared her plate) she is like me & will eat almost anything.

If you actually read the OP, he didn't do that, he could have easily have used any food that he knew OP didn't like but childishly used that word.

  • Yes in these circumstances I would be offended. The spoken and body language especially in front of the children is unacceptable but it depends if it's truly a one off and totally out of character.

My OH is a fussy b..... due to tastes and health issues so I tend to mention to him what I'm thinking of making so he can have a say, but if he doesn't happen to like a meal he does tend to at least eat most of it then tell me he didn't enjoy it, or fix himself something else to eat instead.

I thought you were talking about young children, that was very childish of your teenagers.

He didn't say it was !!!!, he said he didn't like it which is fair enough. He said if he cooked a plate of !!!! he wouldn't expect her to like it. Get some perspective - is it really worth a 3 day row over? Go and give him a cuddle and apologise for misunderstanding him.

It isn't simply childish, it's deliberately mean and nasty. The fact he said "a plate of !!!!!!" instead of say, "a plate of *insert food OP dislikes*" was intentionally offensive. I don't know how anyone could say that sentence without meaning to be rude and hurtful.

my OH is not the most tactful person - but, if he didn't like something I cooked he would just say nothing and leave most of it. he certainly wouldn't have been so disrespectful, especially in front of the kids who were apparently enjoying (or at least eating it), that must feel really upsetting.
But, have you asked him why he made an issue of it at the table? was he having a bad day? and why is it still an issue? yes, something else going on here I think.
  • I would have been extremely offended and upset!

I cook all the meals in our house and I am currently trying out lots of different meals. We always ask each other how the meal is (just habit I suppose!) and he will say honestly if he isn't too keen, he will eat it but say 'it was ok but not really to my tastes' so I know not to make it for him again!

On one occasion he left the chicken I had done in a crumb topping. When I asked if it was ok and why had he left it he said he didn't like it. No offensive language just a statement that it wasn't for him. I apologised and he said 'Don't be daft we have to try new things, the veg and chips are lovely!'.

The way in which he told you, and infront of the children, was inappropriate.
