  • Thanks for the replies.

The landlord said that between 17/12 and 4/1 she only put the heating on for the very cold days. During that time it used 3.5 inches which presumably is 193 litres (3.5 x 55) so average use was just over 11 litres every day.

4 Bed,3 reception, old house in the country in very cold area in Scotland. Windows are useless (its rented). We have log burner, calor gas heaters. Oil fired Rayburn that heats water but not CH. Hardly ever use the heating and we use about 100 litres/week. New boiler last year.

terraced 3 bed with 2 occupants in Oxon and we use less than 2000 litres a year. But we have a 3 year old house with very good insulation. We'd use even less if OH would leave the thermostat alone on 18/19 instead of sweltering on 22! ARGH!
    Also used for hot water.

  • Moved into country cottage 3 beds, detached remote in June and am about to order 3rd 1000 litres of oil now at todays cost 42.5 litre. I am trying to stay sane by justifying that the rayburn does the cooking, heating and water and the electricity bill is only 25.00 per month, no gas, no water charges as we have bore hole and cess pit. We have used 1000 litres since 7th Dec thats 215.00 per month in winter time, will be turning thing off in summer and using woodburner for cold nights...... have elec cooker and water heater... so therfore we should use 6 mths oil at 215 = 1290.... might have to get another four jobs to survive......

Winter time, using the heating, hot water and cooking for about 3-4 hours per day, I use 1000 litres in 3 months. My boiler is supposed to be very efficient for it's type. I guess 10 -12 litres a day would not be unusual. Pants is'nt espeically with oil over 40p a litre.
Glad I'm not the only one using 1,000 litres a month. I seem to use twice as much as my neighbours, perhaps they just wear hat/coat/scarf indoors:D

I am about to reorder oil and am looking at £240 ish for 500 litres. I last put oil in my tank in October 2007 cost about £200, so for £200 it has lasted me 4 months. Not bad i suppose but i only have the heating on in the evening for 3 or 4 hours....

They said they use 1000 litres every 3 months, not 1000 litres a month! You don't really use 1000 litres a month do you?!!!

TBh we need to have a good look at ourselves, whats wrong with wearing warmer clothes inside and turning down the heating? You laugh at it a bit like my parents did at our next door neighbour when I was a kid.
"You should feel lucky, ***** next door makes his family put on a extra jumper when they are cold"
Even though I was only about 8, I still couldn't see what was wrong with that then and I still don't now.
Maybe he was a early greeny, although I doubt it, I think he was just tight. Although nowadays he could say he was prudent, or green, or quite rightly say that prices had gone up so much he can't afford to pay any more.

    That's 1000 litres in 54 days....
Well done you are certainly making me feel better about our usage:rotfl:

Our usage now stands at 10 litres on average per day for 8 hours on the timer and a few top ups on the colder days. It was 12 per then 11 per day so is dropping since we had a part replaced because the boiler wasn't producing any hot water.

Live in a poorly insulated 1968 built 3 bed chalet in Essex that used to drink heating oil - way over 2000 lires a year. However if you have a foam insulated hot water tank and timers for heating and hot water, you can cut the oil consumption. Set the heating to 'constant' and control it's operation with the thermostat - first one up in the morning turns the thermostat up and last to bed turns it down. Set the water timer to produce hot water in the early hours of the morning, (say 5am to 6.15am), the boiler is at it's most efficient doing only one thing. The hot water tank will store sufficient for a couple of showers and a bath - if someone wants a shower late in the day, use the immersion. Controlling the boiler like this has cut my consumption to 1300 litres a year.
And yes, we are being ripped off on the price of Heating oil. For years I found that the price of road diesel at Asda when stripped of fuel tax and VAT, would be the net price I would pay for heating oil. Today the net price of Asda diesel is 40.63p, but my cheapest local supplier is quoting 42.9p
