Four bed 1930s chalet bungalow in Devon, we use about 1800 litres per year for heating and hot water. Worcester Bosch 20/25 combi boiler, heating on from Nov-Apr 2 hrs morning, 4hrs evening, bit longer at weekends if needed.

When we moved in 6 years ago, heating oil was 17.5p per litre, last lot cost me 41.8p per litre

Set the heating to 'constant' and control it's operation with the thermostat - first one up in the morning turns the thermostat up and last to bed turns it down.

    Hi!,
What do you turn the stat down to at night and does this mean the house is cold when the first person gets up?! I had thought about doing this, on the basis that it costs no more to keep the heating ticking over rather turning it off overnight and it having to heat up from completely cold but don't fancy getting up to a cold house!
    thanks,Linda

I saved a fair bit of oil this year by changing the timer settings. I have the heating and hot water come on in the morning, so it's warm when I get up. The heating is off again by 7.30 as most of us are out of the house by 8. I do not have the timer on again for the day. Later in the afternoon when we get in, I 'boost' it for an hour or so to warm up the house if needed. I don't have it on at night as we are all asleep and you sleep better under warm covers if the room heat is not too high.

I have used 1000 litres in the past 3 months and live in a 4 bed detached. It cost about £450.

One point to note is that the gauge is not always correct, if in doubt drop a bamboo cane into the tank to measure how much you have in there. I do that and then mark the stick at the current level.

We live in a 3 bed semi on the side of a mountain in South Wales. We have had our oil central heating for 13 months. We have a Firebird outside boiler which warms our water and 8 radiators (3 double), no other form of heating.
We have bought 1500 litres since it was installed and still have 3/10 of a 1200 litre tank left.
Our house is a 1930's model, but is well insulated and we have just had new uPVC windows and doors (double glazed).
We never use the timer, just put the heating on when someone is cold, it seems to work ok for us.
Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before

350 year old thatched cottage with lots of drafts and poorly fitted cat flaps and a straw roof ;-)

we tend to use 2000 litres just over a year (probably about 13 to 14 months) and we pay monthly, it is £55 per month but that no longer covers the costs and we will have to put this up

we have 8 radiators, the heating is on constantly and we just turn it up and down via the thermostat and it will probably go off at the end of this month and probably back on in october time

Water is instant and we use a lot of it, a full bath at least once a day

The supplier said oil is rising at 0.3p a day, or 10p a month. £1 a litre by winter would mean I could not use it anymore. I hope the figures are wrong.
I am seriously considering a wind turbine, but I have the room for that option.
I am getting a little scares over oil prices.

Given that oil boilers(of all ages) are no less efficient than gas boilers(of all ages), some of these consumption figures are almost unbelievable.

The average gas consumption in UK for a property with CH is 20,500kWh which equates to 2,000 litres of oil. I don't think I have seen any post on here where gas consumption is more than 40,000kWh. (4,000 litres)

If my consumption is any guide, about 70% of that is used in the 6 months from Oct to Mar.

So why such astronomical oil consumption?

You cannot but feel that some people are being 'short changed' on delivery, or have just got their measuring wrong.

The man who said oil would be £1 a litre, isn't the one offering to sell you a wind turbine by any chance ?
