We've had cavity wall insulation as of May 2009 and the difference it's made to our oil consumption is vast. Summer of 2008 when the oil tank got filled in September, it took 890 litres. Summer 2009 when it was filled at the end of October it only took 390 litres :)
  • We use around a tankful (2500L) every two years. That's for a 4-bed detached house, pretty much all rooms in full use.

That does sound reasonable,It would be useful if you could give the make and model of your boiler.
    thanks

Thats extortionate, i live in a 3 bed cottage in Norfolk, and only put in 500 litres of oil in my tank, this lasted from November to March when i switched the heating off. It cost me approx £150 for the 500 litres. During the summer months i use an immersion heater for the water, we also have a woodburner in the living room.

where do you get your oil???? I also live in Norfolk and pay about £300 for 500 litres..

edit> just realised the date of the post!!!! oops!!!

  • I live in a detached 2 bed barn conversion that has underfloor heating that comes via a rayburn. My first winter here and Im amazed at how much oil I seem to be using, its on for about 5 hours in the evening and lately seems to be using 11 litres a day roughly, does that seem right? Been here since March and first load of fuel obviously lasted ages as the hot water doesnt come off the rayburn, now the heating is on a lot I only have a 1200 litre tank so despite topping up 3 weeks ago I can see me needing to do it again in a couple of months.

    Welcome to the forum.

If you look on various threads on MSE and indeed all over the web you will find people appalled at the high oil consumption of a Rayburn - it is a 'lifestyle choice'!

  • Thanks for the link, my 11-12 litres a day isnt bad then as some can use 20 litres according to the model I have! Extra layers of clothing it is then. I am in rented and the main living room has a fire place with a flue thing I presume at one stage they thought about putting a woodburner into, might have a nice word and see if they still feel like fitting one as all the flue/chimney work is done, just needs the woodburner.

We had a victorian 4 bed detached, solid stone walls, tall ceilings, big rooms, big windows, exposed on 3 sides inc North, with oil fired aga - on in the summer too.

We had NEVER less than 4 x 1500 litres deliveries per year. In bad winters we'd have 5!

    Plus electric.

And we had a coal fire.

In a modern detached in the town now... toasty for £1300 pa gas & elec:)

Miss the old place though... and aga cooking.
