Nope. Just look at the price of diesel on the forecourt. It's going up 2-3 p every week near us. Domestic oil will be doing the same, going up that is.
Crude oil is trading on the markets higher every day. That trading is oil futures. Which means that price will hit the forecourts in about 6-8 weeks. So the trend is up up up..... Start knitting everyone because heating our homes is going to be very expensive.

According to boilerjuice, the average price is 55p now, you can probably get it for 53ish.
Its seriously getting nasty now, its got to the point where I am constantly turning off the heating when I am alone and keeping it right down when the family is here, we are all wearing extra jumpers ,which I don't think is a bad thing tbh.
Next Feb I will know how much oil we used in the last year, we filled up this Feb and used 1000 litres last year, that was being careful with the heating, but not as careful as this year and we've used the woodburner alot this year as well.

I'm not sure why, but the trend does seem to be continuously up and up. Its now hitting very hard.

In a large 3 bedroom bungalow, we are using about 200 litres a month in the winter, for ch and hw.

It's because crude oil is trading at over inflated prices on the markets. Investors with money need to invest in something. Currency is unstable, but oil is a highly sought after commodity, so they are buying into it. The price keeps rising as the demand for it rises. Suppliers are not keeping up with demand.

3 bed semi, 1950s property. Newly insulated loft (270mm) and newly insulated cavity walls. Double glazed.

Heating on for 1 hour in the morning and 4 in the evening. Hot water 1 hour in the morning and 30mins evening. Stat set at 19oC, also individual rad stats set low in two spare rooms. Sometimes boost the heating if extra cold - or put a fleece on!!

Consumption over last 3 months is around 800 litres. But since the heating has gone off (a few weeks ago) and just hot water on, the oil stick has hardly moved. So hopefully the remaining 400 litres should last the summer, ready for a refill.

So, looks like getting on for the old average of 2000 per year. Shocking really, as at 55ppl thats £90 per month. I budgeted for £50 when we moved in, as gas at our old house worked out at around £30 per month over the year.

I asked our neighbour who has a recent(ish) oil install with condensing boiler (?)
3 bed semi, 1950's, cavity wall insulation, double glazing and full loft insulation.

They reckon on around 1800L / year....

We have a modern house built in 1999 to whatever insulation standards were in place. There are 5 bedrooms and it's around 2,200 sq ft with 16 radiators, no TRV's. Heating on constant all year with hall thermostat at 19 deg, hot water on constant (we use 1,000 litres a day, much of which is heated for kid's baths etc- another big bill via the water meter) and a bog standard Trianco Eurostar utility boiler (around 86% efficient) that is serviced once a year.

Our consumption has averaged c2,400 litres per annum and is pretty constant.

  • hi to all domestic oil users
i drive a tanker delivering this oil everday,i agree the cost is spiralling horrifically,
just in case this helps ,
if you only order a minimum delivery usually 500lts u will pay approx 2-3ppl more
if you order 1000lts u should get it at moment at 52.95-54.95 ppl
dont be fooled into thinking by ordering more you will pay less as it doesnt tend to get cheaper until you order usually 2500 lts plus
it doesnt always pay to shop around as uyou lose that excellent customer service you have always been used to.as a tanker driverwe hear it every day how expensive it is but nothing we can do about it im afraid.
by the way anothwer way you could get a better deal is by you and your local neighbours in same village usually get together and do a syndicate you may get some more money off ppl it can be done in seperate invoices aswell.
dont forget if you shop around always go back to your usual suppler last they will more than likely do a deal, also dont lie by saying another company is doing it 1ppl cheaper because they will know.
and one last thing if and when you run out in winter because you more than likely will or be very close your regular supplier is more likely to make sure you get your oil.
hope i havent taught you all how to suck eggs just trying to help.
  • We are still surprised about how much oil we have used since moving into a rented property in January.

Last Thursday I measured the oil level as 25 inch from the top on our 2600 litre tank. I drew a line at the level with a black marker pen. Today the oil level is 1/2 an inch lower (-28 litres).

I mentioned this to our landlord who said I must have measured it the first time on a sunny day when the oil was expanded, as it is cloudy today the oil level will be lower. Are any other oil users looking forward to the next sunny day?
