I got a new economy oil furnace installed, but it didn't make much, if any difference to oil consumption. So I thought something not right here, with furnace set on 75c house and radiators were luke warm on max setting. Bled the whole system, still the same...

So I removed all the thermostats on the radiators themselves, and they were ALL seized to one degreee or another so not allowing water or much water to travel through radiators, even when they are all turned to 3.

All cleaned and refitted, house went like a sauna, turned down boiler to 50c from 75c and the house still warmer than it was! Oil consumption has plummeted, barely registered any movement in 3 days. So I done a little observation, furnace comes on for 10 minutes every hour. Temp outside -3°C. Temp inside 25°C. Perfect :)

  • Hi - largeish 4 bed detached in rural Northumberland, solid walls. Can get very cold in winter - we had minus 24 year before last - froze the loo! Oil coupled with a large water heating wood burner and thermal solar panels. Nice combo as long as seasoned wood is plentiful. Running on 10 litres per day of oil in coldest months, slackening off from mid March when solar kicks in.
  • Found this thread while looking up how close to average my annual usage is. 727 litres per year based on 3 years as a three bed house and 2 years as a 5 bed. Heating and water.
  • We got a six bed house with an indoor pool we run off two boilers and 2600 litres of oil only lasts 2 months at £2500 every re fill is this about right? as we think we may have a leek as it used to last longer !!

Sounds lke a high rate of consumption but it depends on the house. Do you really pay 96p.per litre?
  • Hey guys, I know this is a pretty old thread but I have some concerns...

We live in a rented split-house with 3 boilers, one for the main house, one for the annex and one for the pool. The main house is a 5 bed stone country house, with an open fire that is lit when really cold and the heating is on for about 4 - 6 hours a day in the winter. The annex is 4 bed, but only 4 rooms in total are heating, again for about 4 - 6 hours a day in the winter. The pool isn't on at all (won't be on until May time).

We could smell oil very strongly recently and found a small leak under the floorboards. The leak was fixed about 3 or 4 weeks ago and I can only smell oil if I put my nose to the ground... however other people that have come to the house have said they can smell oil in the porch and first reception room but the boiler is at the other end of the house and I can't imagine that smell is coming from that leak.

    We are getting through around 1000L every 3 - 4 weeks :/

    Does that sound right?

Huge amount of oil. About £350 every 3 - 4 weeks at today's very low prices, but was £650 not long ago.

Too many unknown factors to comment on if that consumption is excessive. e.g.

    Insulation properties of building.

How old are boilers and hence efficiency; could be 50% to 90%

How warm do you have rooms?

    Amount of Hot water used?

I doubt any leak would be significant if you can hardly smell it now. Even a litre would create a very strong smell.
