So, people are definitely able to quit smoking. It may take multiple tries, but many do eventually. My guess is that a real spur to giving up is wheneople start to feel serious ill health effects from smoking.

I apologise for introducing facts into this discussion, by the way. ;)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I think the yellow curve should be titled number of surviving smokers who have quit, as the number of smokers has also being going down for an apposite reason.

Couldn't that graph equally well show that smokers die earlier, so the older the age group the smaller the %age of smokers? After all, that is surely showing a snapshot at one time and not the same population at different ages (statistics are so easy to screw up/misinterpret).

It's also misleading as the green and red lines are %age of population, and the yellow line is %age of smokers not of population. I think it's twisting statistics to do this on the same axis/graph.

You're right to say that, as it can be done with help, but it's nobody's job to do that. Would that it were.:o

For some people it might be as easy as crossing the road, for others it's a bigger journey and for a few it'd be like travelling to the dark side of the moon.:(

I've tried numerous times, sometimes managing few months, sometimes struggling to manage a few weeks.

Giving it another go when I finished what's in the house (2 full packs still, so probably Monday). Also going to be giving losing another 2st a go, however as anyone that has smoked knows, the two don't necessarily go together.

    That's what I though too.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I kinda object to the message that its impossible to give up smoking.

Hard yes. Very hard indeed for some. Possibly so hard that the stress outweighs the benefits in a few cases. But impossible? Many prove that wrong.

In fairness my stats were a bit out. The failure rate for quitting cold turkey is 96.5% not 99% as I believed.

Have a go at listening to the latest Freakonomics podcast: that will probably have some ideas that could help. It's about associating things to help you do something positive, e.g. having a whisky whilst folding the laundry or only being able to access a talking book at the gym.

TBH the only thing that did for me was trying again and again and again until it stuck. I had the Devil's own job of quitting but I'm so glad I did. Best of Scottish luck Zag (seems more appropriate than British luck given your politics :)).
