Re Clarkson... not going to comment on what he did or didn't do, but his popularity.
In 2005, Jeremy Clarkson wrote the first volume of his autobiography. It sold in such numbers that it was the best selling non-fiction book of the decade. Since then, his books have really gone off the boil. I'd like to know what the Bookseller numbers are, but his two most recent works were, when I checked earlier in the week, in the 8000s in the Amazon charts. They aren't new releases, so they wouldn't be at the top of the charts, but that's really low sales. They should have had a bit more longevity.
Same in libraries... for a couple of years people haven't borrowed his books. He'd really gone off the boil.
But now, his contract is up for renewal and suddenly he's all the rage again. Now forgive me for being a bit cynical...Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Apparently Clarkson is a very popular author in Poland. Just something I read somewhere. This Clarkson thing is such a storm in a tea cup. I suspect 90% of this is because he's such a hate figure to Guardianistas.
Top Gear isn't even that watched: it got 5 million viewers for that Patagonia thing, one of the most heavily spruiked TV programmes of all time. It reminds me of Match of the Day, people talk about it more than watch it.
There was an obvious but quite fun headline in the Sydney Morning Herald this morning, "Disney Can't Let it Go".0 -
I'm a Guardianista. And I think Clarkson is dull and boorish. I hadn't made the connection before! Thank you for that insight. Sadly for your theory, I don't hate him.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

Maybe I should have used a qualifier of 'many' or 'some' before Guardianistas!
The Guardian really does seem to be obsessed by the man. 8 stories so far today, and your day is only 35 minutes old; 11 stories yesterday; and 7 stories yesterday.
Clearly the question we need to answer is, At what point do we hit Peak Clarkson and what do we do then?0 -
On another thread, people have been asked what they would do if they were chancellor. One said that they would hit foreign companies hard if they didn't pay tax here (I'm inferring that they mean Corp Tax and not vat, employers paye etc).
I asked what they would do if these companies then decided the UK regime were too draconian, given that they account for29% of UK gva.
Someone else answered that they would just wait for new companies to turn up instead.
I shouldn't hang out in DT. Economic debate is better here.
Please don't quote will delete.
I'm agitated because my beautiful, wonderful, caring, sweet, generous mother in law has just died. One of the last things she asked was whether we were angry at her for smoking, because she liked it. No I said, just terribly, desperately sad, because of what has happened. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It's like the economic version of being functionally illiterate.vivatifosi wrote: »Please don't quote will delete.
So sorry to hear about that. There's no point in being angry with someone for that. Once you start smoking you have little choice but to continue. I gave up but I am one of a very small number that manage it. Almost all smokers claim to want to quit but only about 1% do.
If you smoke you have a 50/50 chance of it killing you. Those are pretty poor odds and AIUI there isn't anything you can do to shift them in your favour.0 -
