I work at the other end of the ship canal, I can see the ship canal from my bedroom window and work ins Salford Quays - I should get a boat instead of tackling the M62!.

When I'm visiting family in Scotland, the ship canal marks the halfway point for the journey.:)

The rate of non participation is high, not surprisingly. I wonder how accurate it is?

I think the trouble is that, if someone does have bowel cancer, they may not have bleeding all the time; so if they don't happen to have any bleeding during the five days, it won't get picked up anyway.

Hitting one of your work colleagues is a BIG deal. Maybe it varies a bit according to where you work, but in the genteel environment of the BBC I would have thought it would normally count as gross misconduct and warrant immediate dismissal.

I have no idea what actually happened, and I have no idea why the BBC are themselves reporting that this could cost them £millions in compensation. Maybe they mean lost sales to other broadcasters?

And yes, the Top Gear franchise has been done to death.

I am in no way condoning what he allegedly did, however this needs to be subject to police investigation, of which to the best of my knowledge there isn't one. If there is enough evidence to charge him with an offence, then yes, he should be fired, however bearing in mind he isn't arrested, this needs to be taken into account too.

The £millions is in lost sales of the programme.

Jeremy (or indeed the other two) aren't employees of the BBC, but contractors of Bedder 6 Limited, which is the production company working on Top Gear. This is in no way funded by the taxpayer. This corporate structure (originally as Jeremy and Andy Wilman had ownership of this company) only serves to further complicate things.

To the best of my knowledge, the company was sold to BBC Worldwide around 2007 for a rather significant sum.

Well it is at least 8 months since the car broke down and needed towing so I guess we shouldn't be surprised that it happened again this morning

Clutch problem so damage ranges from a min of about £100 if it is the slave cylinder up to £800 if they decide it needs a new clutch and dmf. We budget a seemingly ludicrus £100 per month on car repairs and yet every year we seem to exceed that - the car is now 6 years old (2009 reg) and only 75k...it is beyond a joke.

In reality we also have a second car that costs at least 400pa just because this one is so unreliable, taxis/hiring might be cheaper....
    I think....

    Sounds nasty, Michaels.

My current car (same as the previous one, except the colour) has exactly the same problems as the one before it and has been back to Jaguar now 4 times. I will note, however, that any problems it's had rectified haven't come back. Most of it is minor stuff that doesn't need to be done, whereas a clutch obviously does.

Currently just over 6 months old with 33000 miles (nearly 7000 were done in last month).

    Hope it gets sorted soon!

    That's not OK.

My car is 08 reg (although probably lower mileage than yours) and has yet to break down on me at all, unless I'm forgetting something. I mean, it's had faults sometimes, but nothing bad enough to require a tow. In your position, I'd replace the thing. Having a car that's reliable is important to me to the extent that I would prioritise it over other possible uses of my money.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Get a new car and say keep it 6 years and you are probably talking 2.5k pa in depreciation. Get a second hand car and what gaurentee do you have that it will be any more reliable than the one you have?

We bought this one at 28 months old (so not an 'old banger ihho) and 40k miles and it has been carp, previosuly we have had 2 of the same model that were fine.

Oh I agree with your buying strategy. I got this one when it was about 2 years old. But if I had one that turned out to be as unreliable as yours seems to be, then I'd cut my losses and replace it at this point.

I see no connection between an employer's duty to protect other employees from bullying and a criminal prosecution. They can be pursued, and should be pursued, independently.

Clearly, if the BBC is losing out on profits from the programme this is a loss to the taxpayer. Likewise if the production company is owned by the BBC, I don't understand 'This is in no way funded by the taxpayer.'

I hope the BBC pursue Clarkson for any lost profits, but I doubt they will.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I bought my previous Honda Civic new in 2003. In 2011 I sold it to my son. He neglected it manfully.
Nothing ever went wrong apart from a flat battery. He traded it in at the end of last year and total depreciation over 11.5 years was about £1k per year. It was still a great runner when he traded it; clutch was beginning to show early signs of slipping, after a total 88k miles.
