Probably. Private schools are very good at allowing people not to cash in, anecdotedly state schools make it very difficult - just worth enquiring if they will let you.

Interesting. My experience is that it's state schools that are keener on entering students for modules one at a time, so they can retake as they go along, while the private schools I've taught at have tended to prefer not to enter students for anything until the end of the course. I'm sure there's a lot of variation, anyway, so thanks for the heads up.

It may all be irrelevant, anyway. A little digging on the AQA website suggests that a change of rules a couple of years ago means that candidates can't take the exams in a modular way in separate sessions. To get a qualification you have to sit all its bits in the same exam "session" - eg summer 2016 is a different session from spring 2017, which is different from summer 2017. If I've understood correctly, he can do sci in Y10 and then ad sci plus further ad sci in Y11. But if he wants bio, chem and phys he'll have to take B1, C1 and P1 in Y11 when he does the other papers, whether he also took them in Y10 or not. Hmmm. Further thought necessary here.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

so not to be sniffed at. ;)

Do you mind? Some of us catch up with the NPday whilst eating dinner! :p
Important activity though. And if you hadn't succeeded in increasing your appreciation of toilet paper yet, you've got a fabulous opportunity now :D

Clarkson - I guess the main problem this presents the BBC is that Top Gear is such a worldwide money spinner... and the oafish attitude is a part of that. That in no way excuses violence in the workplace (how do so many people feel that is acceptable?), but I expect he knows that they will be reluctant to get rid of him. I don't think it would be long before we saw Top Gear on another channel.

Edit: Oh, and I got home to *another* letter from npower. Except this one was addressed to the previous tenants. Who moved out Summer 2013

Been resting up today ready for dentist tomorrow. Was a bit grim and grizmal all day so couldn't prune anyway (I have to sit while gardening, so rain makes that difficult). Anyway, this evening the clouds rolled away, and we had a succession of gorgeous pink fluffy clouts passing before my window. Forgot had camera up here, so missed them, but did manage to get one half decent (though bit shakey) photo of river and sky.

Wish I had the tripod sorted out and up here now, as the lights across the river have wonderful reflections. Love the view I have from my bed! :)

    That's a terrific picture, Maggie.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Some people seem to feel it is acceptable for famous "personalities" to do things that would be considered unacceptable if anybody else did them, especially if the behaviour in question constitutes some kind of persona or even "brand". I thought we were meant to have learnt that that's not wise.

That should in no way be construed as implying that Clarkson has until now been getting away with anything other than being oafish, or that he has now done anything worse than this one incident. I have no information about anything. I only know that allowing famous people to get away with stuff because they are famous and the behaviour is somehow part of their "brand" is dangerous.

I might be reading too much into it, but i can't believe it's coincidence Clarkson and the other two presenters contracts are up for renewal next month. It's well known that Clarkson thinks the current Program format is tired, so a jump to another channel looks inevitable.

I dunno - why not just let the contract expire? I'm sure there would already have been a queue to sign them up without drumming up more controversy.

I agree that the format is tired - I watched Top Gear for a season, and found it fairly entertaining. But it's pretty much the same every week, and I got bored so stopped watching. I'm not convinced that that isn't part of it's success though. People know exactly what they're getting when they tune in.

With any luck they move, try to shake things up, no-one likes it any more and they disappear from our tv screens.

Clarkson sold his share in the Top Gear Production company to the BBC for a few million quid a couple of years ago. He'd prefer it look that he was pushed rather than jumped.

Surely, Clarkson doesn't do stuff for extra publicity?
