what gaurentee do you have that it will be any more reliable than the one you have?

None. But I'd guess it would be highly unlikely to surpass your current vehicle in terms of unreliability.

For me it's not just the cost of all these repairs, it's the hassle and the 'will it/ won't it work'ness that needs to be added into your cost: benefit analysis.

Get a new car and say keep it 6 years and you are probably talking 2.5k pa in depreciation. Get a second hand car and what gaurentee do you have that it will be any more reliable than the one you have?

We bought this one at 28 months old (so not an 'old banger ihho) and 40k miles and it has been carp, previosuly we have had 2 of the same model that were fine.

My feeling is that Fiat have been cheapening up their mechanical bits. They were never very good, but now they are worse.

    - the car is now 6 years old (2009 reg) and only 75k...it is beyond a joke.

55 plate ex GPO vauxhall combo van - with seats in the back, had it about 4 years. Got it at 33 k, now has 170k, so far clutch and it's been towed once when the fan belt snapped. I am thinking of replacing it, can't decide what with - soemthing else that 5 dogs can trash basically.

I'm generally lucky with vehicles; I am now touching wood like you wouldn't believe.

And I have just bought 3 new shiny Renault Master vans:D

With our fiat there was a new version in 2005, general consensus amongst owners is that the old version was better 'quality' in terms of materials used, sound proofing etc. New version had less 'challenging' looks through. Newer ones also have 'new' engine which whilst cleaner has many more bits to go wrong.

Problem is even perceived quality brands like VW have lots of horror stories these days, cars generally seem a lot less reliable than those made 10 years ago.

In our house we have the 54 plate Citreon C2, still running perfect only problems it has had is a replacement battery, other parts have been replaced due to me running out of talent on a track day.

There is an 05 ford focus which is using oil (its not coming out the bottom), nothing too bad just a little top up every 3 months.

Got faith both will start and go when needed.

I just realised I only ever seemed to have owned cars made by companies from the former Axis powers. I'd be loathe to buy another Fiat. Once had a Nissan micra (20 years ago, just before our first child). It was an astonishingly good workhorse. Transported a fireplace to the tip, washing machine from the store, five of us between Surrey and all points north.

When we finally got another after ten years, it wasn;t as good. Lacked oomph or vavavoom or whatever they call that nowadays. :o

Get a nearly new Kia with a 7 yr warranty? You would have to drive it unfortunately...

You know what he drives now. I don't think Kia is going to be a problem. :o

If I were similarly minded, that is exactly what I would do.

I see no connection between an employer's duty to protect other employees from bullying and a criminal prosecution. They can be pursued, and should be pursued, independently.

Clearly, if the BBC is losing out on profits from the programme this is a loss to the taxpayer. Likewise if the production company is owned by the BBC, I don't understand 'This is in no way funded by the taxpayer.'

I hope the BBC pursue Clarkson for any lost profits, but I doubt they will.

I agree - if you punch someone at work then assuming there is sufficient evidence that you did it (and the evidential bar is lower in an employment case than in criminal law) you should be fired irrespective of whether you are criminally prosecuted. I think the employer should take into account whether the injured party has reported the matter to the police during its own investigation but how the police decide to take things forward is not relevant to the employer's assessment of whether gross misconduct was committed.

I guess the financial issue for the bbc is that they have sold top gear to basically every other country in the world - I assume taking money in advance vs. future shows which they may now have to pay back.

I can take over from Clarkson for the last 3 episodes. I'm sure I can hop in a car and find the loud pedal.
