I'm off to unscrew that metal ring bit .... see if it comes off.
Edit: yes it did, just 7 short turns anti clockwise and it's now sitting here beside me.....
Edit 2: The plastic knob's got a name on it too: Myson TRV 2 Way
£14 on Amazon! Crikey, I expected something to cost £2-3.0 -

Phew, no flood
Basically the ring should be on the bottom of the valve bit with a sort of collar so when you screw the new one on it holds the valve bit in place. The reason for setting the new one to hot to fit it is hot = out for the sticky uppy bronze coloured 'pin' bit and thus the pin will not try and hold the new one too high and prevent you getting the new ring bit onto the thread.I think....0 -
It is pretty likely this one from screwfix for 2.99 would fit

We have these on the vertical 'designer' rads either side of the bi-fold doors in our kitchen - £40 each for rad valves, what was I on at the time?!

Sorry to read about your tinnitus - does it come on often, and go quickly?
I did initially wonder why Fir's shorter hair would cause you to have tinnitus, before my brain detached the two. I know that my own suddenly much shorter hair has caused me earache in the past when the wind can then whistle down the lug'ole :cool:0 -

The bit I don't get is that if it was set to 0 when it broke off and if I screw it on set to HOT, then won't it be just wrong and won't move hotter?
Surely ... brain tells me ... it's not going to be as simple as setting the new plastic knob to HOT and screwing it on as then it'd be "out of step" with how it was set when broken off.0 -
I really need to [a] cut the grass now the furries are gone.... and sort out these soddin' leaves that are ankle deep in parts of the garden and flying around like banshees and tapping the window so it sounds like a downpour a lot of the time.
I have to pop out... I'm going to the local shop to try to find something that will "corral" the leaves by careful positioning of something that's flexible, that I can cobble into the corner, propped up by the chairs, so that as they're swirling round I've a chance of catching some of them before I work out how to collect/remove them. There are too many to keep manually taking to the tip in piece-meal fashion.0 -

Ah-ha, the 'pin' bit is spring-loaded so will always try and come out (radiator on), the broken bit only determines how much it is pushed down (all the way down = rad off). The clever bit with a thermostatic valve is as it warms up it automatically pushes the pin down, setting the rad valve level determines how hot or cold it is before the pushing down starts. Don't worry, it will workI think....0
