You mean the plastic knob right? if the metal has a rectangle pin bit of metal at the top sticking out you can use pliers to turn it.
The guy in this video is messing with it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyCBMz6U6ZU
Yes, the plastic knob.
I looked at the video - to say it petrified me is an understatement....
Photo of mine attached, not because I think anybody here can fix it by mind control, but to be clear

Do people tend to abide by the rules? I fully understand the reasons for them and the serious consequences of things going wrong, but I strongly suspect that over here society is so individualistic that some people would refuse to comply as a matter of principle.
Oh yes. People absolutely follow the rules as the consequences for not doing so can bw hundreds dead and millions in property damage.
Of course there are arsonists known as Firebugs here. In country areas they are sometimes taken into custody on Fire Ban days. One of the really bad fires in the Blue Mountains last year was started by a Firebug IIRC. Again IIRC they caught him *it's always him).
By and large people follow the rules just like people don't ride a unicycle uo the M1 or throw firecrackers at the SAS barracks in Hereford.0 -
I didn't know that. Of all the health risks associated with short sleeping hours, that is the one that might actually scare me into changing my habits.
The only risk factors I know about are lack of continuous regular sleep, being old, being female, and having a large drop then a large boost in estrogen levels as in starting HRT after the menopause (but starting it before estrogen drops protects against Alzheimers). There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Had a good night last night
It wasn't the easiest flowing conversation at times, but it wasn't bad at all. I've had a lot worse! I thought it was dragging a bit but when I looked at my watch it had got to 1am without me realising, good sign I think. Said we'd see each other again. She's working during the football on sunday, and I'm in town to watch the game so I'll text her and ask her if she wants to meet up after; strike while the iron's hot.
Good news too. I was misinformed, F is very much single. She mentioned that she'd broken up with someone so I asked if this was Martin (the guy she was with a few months ago) and she said it was. So no such worries.
It's all very up in the air at the moment, as neither of us know where we'll be in even a month's time... but like I say it was nice just to go out with someone (doesn't happen very often).“I could see that, if not actually disgruntled, he was far from being gruntled.” - P.G. Wodehouse0 -

Thanks. Was the aluminium saucepan thing disproved, then?
Just got back from taking DD to see the therapist that's near my work. Liked her a lot better in person than over the phone. DD liked her too and said she found even the introductory session helpful.
Feeling v proud of DD because therapist was v impressed with how articulate she is and what a wide vocabulary she was using. [/smug parent mode]
For some reason my fingers tried more than once to type that as smaug parent mode. Hope I am not a dragon mother! :rotfl:Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I can't picture you as Smaug, Lydia. Not even a teeny weeny bit.
Glad it went well today.0 -

Yep I think that's in the dustbin of history now.
On another note, as we're mentioning stickmen, can I suggest this for those of a science bent?
I expect you're all familiar with it anyway.

Thanks, but I seem to be OK so long as it's just for occasional project deadlines.
Definitely not as easy as it was when I was younger.
Pretty sure I'll get tired of it one day and pack it in. Not today though.
Maybe I need a mug to keep me focused.....:D“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

I went to check out the new Samsung virtual reality headset today which goes on sale on Monday over here. Blimmin flip it's good.
Do you get motion sickness at all - I imagine in a vr headset I would vomit within about 30s.HAMISH_MCTAVISH wrote: »If you work 20 hours in a day you work more or less non stop, eat at home office desk, sleep 4 hours, wake up and do it all over again.
Since I last posted I've completed 3 spreadsheets and a powerpoint presentation. I'll be in bed by 3 and up at 7 and do the same again tomorrow. I do take toilet breaks and nuke some food in there somewhere.
It's not productive over the long haul, but needs must when there's a deadline on.
No, I think we probably are nuts....
It's only in recent years that I realised such patterns are a bit abnormal. It's all I've ever known, and I used to assume people that didn't work that way were slackers or lacked ambition.
TBH the NPT has made me see things a bit differently.
I like this post.I've had a similar problem for years in finance. It's a job that can't be done 9-5 and it's unpredictable when the late nights will be.
I'm also simply fed up with working in an industry where ripping off clients is the normal way to do business. Fund managers all know that they're highly unlikely to outperform the market for extended periods and that their clients will lose after fees vs index fundsyet mmaintain the lie year after year.
Had enough of it.
My employer provided pension under performs the indicies but it seems it would take a lot of steps for me to try and get it put in a low cost tracker instead.
I wonder if there is a big problem with fund management and perverse incentives, the managers may be incentivised to take an above average risky position as if they out perform they can attract extra business from topping tables but if they under perform then they just soldier on slightly less popular?I think....0 -

Probably not that many years behind you TBH. I'll stick it out for a while yet, but likely to do my own thing at some point.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.
