I can't picture you as Smaug, Lydia. Not even a teeny weeny bit.

    Glad it went well today.

    You reassure me. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

    Yes, the plastic knob.

I looked at the video - to say it petrified me is an understatement....

Photo of mine attached, not because I think anybody here can fix it by mind control, but to be clear :)

Good news, this is in changing a (normal) light bulb diy territory. (Edit: actually even easier as it is not out of reach nor is there any possible electrical danger)

Unscrew the silver coloured outer ring that is 'rough' so you sould be able to do this by hand and take it with you to b&q / wickes / homebase and ask for a replacement radiator stat valve and they will have a choice of suitable ones starting at about a tenner but you can pay more if want it to look posher. With the new one set it to full hot and you will be able to screw it on in the same way as the old one came off.
    I think....

Probably not that many years behind you TBH. I'll stick it out for a while yet, but likely to do my own thing at some point.

IIRC you are the same generation as me although a little younger.

I went from 'I don't really enjoy this', to 'before turning the gun on himself' in very short order.

I've never mentioned it before, but one of my radiators has the knob broken off. The twisty knob where you set the temperature. I'm assuming it's still safe to use and I'll just not know what temperature it's set to, nor be able to change it. For me, it's the kitchen one, so I'd prefer to have to only set to the frost-free option as I don't heat kitchens (no point heating a room if you'll just be in there for 20 minutes/day to make a few coffees, microwave a spud and make some toast, so it'd be annoying if it were stuck/broken off on full blast.

It's not something one can call out a plumber to fix, not worth the cost, which I assume would be a lot.

I've done the same. Swinging a suitcase out of the way, it hit the radiator control and snapped it off. Wasn't as clean a break as PNs. It can wait til BG do their annual service and they can fix it at the same time.

Well, that sounds doable! That silver ring is moving round - I did screw it in both directions, but then got scared it might suddenly erupt into a fountain (even though my sensible head said it's not going to happen like that), so I stopped fiddling and took the photo.

Your explanation sounds doable to me :)

I'll also take the broken plastic knob bit with me, as I find when I try to explain what I want they then ask a question that leaves me stumped.

When I was trying to buy a shed lock I was trying to draw what I meant in the air, but they had no idea what I was on about .... they'd asked "what sort of lock?" ... I then decided to take the existing one off and kept it in my bag - and then I wandered in a hardware shop and they had an identical one on the wall!

I think you're obliged now to follow michaels' explanation and fix this yourself. Then we can at least compare disaster stories when it doesn't turn out to be that simple :)
