I'm going on a whistle-stop trip to NYC in November. I would like to take the opportunity to see the site where the World Trade Centre stood as I think it would be a very humbling and moving experience. Has anyone ever done this?

Whilst down this end of Manhatten we plan to go on the Staten Island Ferry (for the skyline views) and see Wall Street etc. Any other suggestions?
The first time I went to NYC in November 2002, my hotel room overlooked the WTC site. That, in itself, was quite a sobering experience. The second time, October 2006, we stayed in the same hotel (this time we had a view of the Hudson River) and ate breakfast in a cafe next to the WTC site (the Essex World Cafe) which was used as some sort of emergency medical centre in the aftermath of the attack. There were photographs which were taken at that time all around the walls.

Anyone flown with Zoom and what did you think?
    thanks

I just got in this morning - JFK to Gatwick - very much an easyjet type experience - 5 hour delay at JFK with no explanation and no-one to ask - (boarded us after 3 hours and then left us on the plane for another 2 hours waiting to take off) - no refreshments offered - meal was served at 11.30pm by which time I was asleep so can't comment on it - seats ok (though not brilliant for 7 hours +) - various screens throughout the plane which I could not clearly see - the films I would not have wanted to see though - one of the 2 was at least 10 years old (though shrek 3 was showing on the way out).
Not really critisism though as Zoom does appear to offer amazing value for money - I would rather pay a bit more next time and get a bit better quality service - but thats my personal opinion - I'm sure it would suit many people down to the ground.:D
  • i've flown from JFK on many a friday evening and it's notorious for sitting on the tarmac going nowhere particularly quickly
  • I have came across this website for New York some good info on it, heres the link

I thought the "free to see" in the cheapo thrills section might interest MSE new york travellers. ;)

    nice one..

on a free to see thing, i find wandering the streets of soho / greenwich / chelsea areas of manhattan gives you plenty to see, its quieter than midtown, its clean, sometimes tranquil, plenty of architecture, plenty of GOOD places to eat.... walking is the best way to see nyc

I agree, markymoo, those areas are really nice. We tended to get the subway only if we were really tired towards the end of the day or if our (very loose) plans meant we needed to get from one end of the city to the other in a short space of time.

  • Just wanted to leave details of a very very cheap (and reputable rated #11 of best hotels in NY) hotel in NY, i have booked for Nov/Dec 07, as i know how ridiculous and daunting NY hotel prices seem, so this might soften the blow a bit!

  • Have a look at the big apple hostel (not hotel) for cheap and central accommodation. A little rough and ready from what I can see, but good value. Not sure about flights from Manchester, but Zoom do cheap flights from London.

If landing at JFK, any official yellow cab will take you to your hotel on Manhattan Island for $45, or at least it was last year.

Just in case you are not too sure, central is streets in the high 40's to high 50's and between 4th and 9th Avenues. Walking is great, but as always take a good pair of shoes with you.
