go to grand central by all means.. the extravagance is amazing, but walk onto the platforms, and it all disappears....

try some of the companies that run from Grand Central to see where you can go

  • if you take the hudson line from grand central you could visit cold spring

this line takes you past the prison at ossining (sing sing) ...it's quite a pleasant journey along the side of the hudson river and not that expensive taking about an hour each way.
use the metro north link above for fares and schedules
probably ok to have a chill out from the city for a couple of hours . i also like mt kisco and chappaqua where the clintons resided ....these places are just ok places to go (i've spent quite a bit of time in this area ) but i wouldn't put them on my must see list coming all the way out from the city.
have a look at what cold spring has to offer you on the web and decide
  • I was looking for 2 rooms for 4 adults for 23-27 August in the mid-town madison sq gardens\times Sq area of NYC and managed to find Courtyard New York Manhattan/Times Square for around £100 per room per night.

Is that a good deal and should i stick with it or can you reccommend anything better?

I'm going on a whistle-stop trip to NYC in November. I would like to take the opportunity to see the site where the World Trade Centre stood as I think it would be a very humbling and moving experience. Has anyone ever done this?

Whilst down this end of Manhatten we plan to go on the Staten Island Ferry (for the skyline views) and see Wall Street etc. Any other suggestions?

Definitely visit the site of the two towers and visit the church next to it which was used during the rescue-I defy anyone to come out of that church not humbled or dry eyed. That to me had far more impact than what is basically now a cleared space.
There are some extraordinary huge photos from those days outside along the edge of the site-one of people looking up in disbelief and horror will stay with me forever.
