BB Kings is a fairly good venue, however it is pricey, I went a couple of years ago, and found that it was $7 - $8 for a beer (inc a tip) however, some other bars are $4 - $6 for the same..

check out pollstar.com for all music concert listings in NYC..
  • just a quick way that some native new yorkers work out the tip when buying food ...double the sales tax on the bill which equates to approx. 17% (dependant on which county you are in but roughly the same ) .
i haven't entered this to debate the merits of tipping but can assure you that the 'uk standard 10%' isn't what's expected
  • if you are thinking of combining a city trip to new york combined with say a week driving about one suggestion could be as follows .(especially if you are a couple)
do the usual fly to jfk and train / taxi etc into NYC for a few days of sightseeing.
hire a car from hertz in north white plains as a one way pick up.. dropping off at jfk in time for your flight.
north white plains is reached on the metro north railroad (harlem line) from grand central station ...about 40 minutes and $6.25 off peak and $8.50 peak single each. the station is just across the road from the hertz depot.
as you aren't renting the car from the airport or nyc you will find the rental rates very competitive (compare against picking up and returning car to jfk)..it's easy to get to .
finally the hertz depot is ideally situated for the tappan zee bridge which gives easy access for heading north from NYC (interstate 87 etc )
just an alternative and of course you end up back at JFK with your bulging bags.

Bath & Body Works is my favourite for bath stuff. I love the Orange Ginger range and also the Brown Sugar & Fig range. There are a number of shops in New York. You can't beat buying Clinique Makeup while you're out there, I bought some in Macy's and Century 21. Don't forget to get your discount Card in Macy's for 11% discount.

  • I second the post about Bath and Body works, they often have offers on too.
Just go to the customer service desk in Macys and Bloomingdales and you will get a card.

To get your 11% discount card for Macy's, take your International ID to the visitors centre on the mezannine level...

also, at both macy's and bloomingdales, when you've spend $50 on one receipt, take it and you get a free bag / keyring thing... woohoo

and there is the dedicated new york thread with nearly 7 pages of useful infofrmation!
