Just found an email that I sent my friend with various links to NY in it, so I've cut and pasted it here. Lots of restaurants, other forums etc.

i stayed at Wolcot hotel, west 31st ,last dec staying again this Dec. Very reasonable, old but clean. Brilliant location. Just around corner Empire state bldg, a must ,go early no queues. Get a $7 bus ticket travel all day on buses. I went to ground zero, free Staten Island ferry(fantastic views from ferry ) and rode back on bus through China Town all in one day and still got back to hotel by 5pm.Times Square a short walk away from hotel lovely in evening with bright neon signs and loads of shops. Enjoy it I lovedit can't wait to go back this year!!0

Hello everyone,
I am making a plea for some help! I want to surpise my partner with a trip to New York in December. We can be flexible with dates and would like 4-6 nights there.
I have never been there before and don't know where to start. I am on a tight budget but have always wanted to go there!
Any advice on current offers / cheap flights/ hotels much appreciated.
Thanks everyone

We're looking to stay in NY for 3 nights starting 24th Sept but the hotel prices seem very exxpensive. Theres a few international conventions on so demand has pushed the accom prices up. Has anyone stayed in Newark airport hotels or New Jersey? Hyatt and Marriot in New Jersey are both full...aagh!!
We want to fly to Newark as its closer to the port when we return from our cruise (fingers crossed as not booked any of this yet cos the hotel problem).
Thanks, hope someone replies quickly.

Hi all, some great tips here. Thanks. Wondered if anyone could give me some advice on a problem I'm having with booking a hotel room for September. I have quite a bad allergy to cat and dog hair and really don't want to book into any room that has had pets in it. Would suffer for my whole stay. The problem is very few hotels seem to be able to guarantee they are pet free. I've never come across this problem in the UK or Europe, but this will be our first trip to the States. Does anyone know of a good central hotel which could provide a guaranteed pet-free room? Doesn't have to be midtown but as central as poss. Thanks.

Hiya. Are you looking for flights & accommodation?
Try looking at TripAdvisor for recommendations.... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g28951-New_Jersey-Hotels.html
Continental flies to UK (many direct routes) from Newark / Liberty airport. We use them every year and they've been just fine in the main.
If you're a fan of the series House (with Hugh Laurie), then you might think about a hotel in the Princeton area for a laugh - Princeton is a very pretty university town about 1 hr south of Newark.

PS - I wouldn't think you'd get a very good sleep in Newark with the jets etc - another possibility would be the so-called Jersey shore - parts of which are really nice. We're looking to stay in NY for 3 nights starting 24th Sept but the hotel prices seem very exxpensive. This a special offer - have to book flights by 25 August - £199 return including taxes but its to JFK
http://www.flyzoom.com/
Seems good price. Hope it helps someone0 -
Zoom airlines are doing returns Gatwick to New York for £198. Tried it without buying and looks OK. Includes all taxes (choose the £22.50 flights). Have not seen prices this low since the last king died. Try flyzoom.com there are some dates that are more expensive but we reckon half term can still be done with 5 nights - happy holidays0
