Ryanair want to charge £40 for baggage both ways!

Relating to nobody in particular - obviously - but as a relative newcomer
I have often though that together with the 'Quote' 'Thanks' 'Report' etc buttons a valid, and I suspect well supported case could be made for a
'Nutter' button.Turning left avoids some of the idiots (only some)0 -
Guys, it is a waste of time trying to show Rory his ill thought out ideas.
This is the guy, who books a 15 year old on as the lead name for a booking on Expedia and his other complaints are about a faulty phone.
I wouldn't waste your energy posting anything else to him, he wont take any notice.0 -
Ok I'll bite again. When you book a flight and hotel deal through expedia, it displays your flight, with the Ryanair logo and directly underneath the flight times it says:
So they have told you it's hand baggage only. Furthermore that text is actually a clickable link. When clicked it takes you to a page which explains that hold baggage will be extra.
They do give you another chance though. On the final page where you enter your payment details, between the payment details and the big "Complete Booking" button, there's a summary box of your trip. Which includes:
So they didn't hide it from you I'm afraid. I'll say it again you assumed baggage was included. It wasn't and you've had a nasty shock. More so considering Expedia do advise you.
You're entitled to think paying extra for baggage is not normal. You're entitled to think its extortion. I'm not sure when you last travelled short haul but paying extra is normal. Very normal and has been for years. And yes, many many people go hand baggage only now (the hand baggage allowance is pretty generous).
Not sure where you're going... But you could have flown a number of airlines. British Airways, Monarch, jet2, easyJet, Thomson, Thomas Cook among others. All of who charge you extra to take a checked suitcase.
You have to admit that it is confusing...
My daughter booked a similar package through Expedia, but using Flybe rather than Ryanair. I knew that Flybe tickets do not include checked baggage and so warned her that she would probably need to pay more for this, unless she could manage with hand luggage only. We read all the details of the holiday that Expedia provided without finding any information, nor links, about the cost of checked baggage. It was only when we went to the Flybe site and eventually found a way to examine her booking there that we discovered that a generous checked baggage allowance was already included.0 -
All the relevant info is displayed during the booking process. They also have a page which can be accessed at any time which outlines baggage policies for every airline.0

I genuinely hope you're not questioning my sanity, "Pete".
Again - I'm amazed by how much time you have on your hands to utterly, and overwhelmingly, oppose an airline which is so expensive for such poor service.
I'm fully aware that Ryanair's turnover is very large indeed, and this is because people who stay in cheap hotels, don't take baggage and don't care about a quality service are (apparently) abundant.
I guess my preconceptions as to what is a 'normal' flyer were incorrect.
But the fact remains that I've had to spent an utterly futile £160 on baggage fees alone, after the flight was advertised much more cheaply on Expedia. It's a waste of money, and that is a fact.
Thank you all for your condescending replies,

The fact remains you have chosen to spend £160 rather than pack within the hand luggage limits, and you ignored the information presented to you during booking.0 -

You keep ignoring the fact that Expedia made the baggage fee clear when you booked, presumably because acknowledging this would require you to take a modicum of personal responsibility. And heaven forbid, we can't have that.0 -

The OP is ignoring anyone that's posting a sensible reposnse.Voyager2002 wrote:You have to admit that it is confusing...
In the instance you describe yes it is confusing. But when booking a Ryanair flight Expedia do make it pretty clear on more than one occasion. The flybe example may be do to with the fact that fares booked through the GDS (agent) Expedia use may include luggage.
What I find more confusing is Expedia selling Ryanair flights. For a long time Ryanair have stated agents have not been allowed to book their flights. A few years back they made a right song and dance about it threatening to cancel bookings (although no one ever heard of them actually doing so - and their issues with agents were outside of the UK)
In the interim period many holiday type agents have sold Ryanair flights, to which Ryanair have turned a blind eye. However with such a big, and I daresay reputable agent like Expedia now selling them I do wonder if Ryanair are making inroads into selling via agents...0 -
Hello all,
Having revisited this thread and laughed at your comments (some snide and vituperative; some just mischievous) I thought I'd get my final feelings on record.
It was one of the best flights I've ever had.
No kidding, the process was quick, simple and easy with no trouble at all. The flight back had a few very minor inconveniences, but it was a good all round trip nonetheless. I commend Ryanair's service. My preconceptions now seem humorously unsubstantiated.
However, this does not mean that Ryanair have always been good in my book as I have recalled bad experiences with them, alas that's all they are...experiences.
Take care money saving experts,

I simply stated at the beginning of this thread that I did not like their baggage fees. I know flights are definitely not cheap, but Ryanair's extra charges are outrageous.
I genuinely hope that MSE members in other sections are much more friendly and helpful than all who replied to this thread.
Despite that, thanks for taking time out of your evidently busy lives, simply to defend a rubbish airline and accuse me of ignorance and idiocy.
Thank you all,
Rory
Don't let them upset you Rory. Some people on here just love to find a reason to insult other posters - I think they missed the bit about being nice to all moneysavers!0
