Only reason for booking a seat is if you want to be sure you can sit next to someone you are travelling with - on the other hand you may prefer to be at the other end of the plane to them.

I appreciate the "pay for the luggage you take" system - DS is off abroad for one year and can take up to 3*22kg bags with Jet2 @ £14.50 each.

These so called extras are disguised as such to give you the illusion of choice.

That said, if you'd be happy to take absolutely no baggage at all, get a horrible seat on the plane etc. then that's your business.

But what you don't seem to understand is that normal people take luggage away with them. It's absolutely no question whether I take luggage or not.

Rather than argue about it, why can't you see that these fees are needless?

you can take up to 10kg of luggage each with you onboard with Ryanair, free of charge (as long as your bag is within the right measurements). As a comparison, I'm not long home from a 17-day trip to 3 destinations, I paid for hold luggage with several airlines, and even with packing everything we wanted (ie we could have packed lighter) none of our cases weighed more than 15 kilos, out or back.

And, as has already been said, the days of hold baggage included in the base price on most short-haul flights are long gone - years and years ago.

I like the current model - you pay for what your want as extras - if you can go without the extras, it makes your flight cheaper - and lots of us can go without the extras on short-haul :).

These fees are a necessity otherwise the price of each flight would double and why should people who don't want any extras have to pay more for their flight.
I must be "normal" then because I pay for 20kg of luggage, inflight meals and seats together and i'm happy to do so because its my choice and its part of my holiday.
I also wouldn't go on a family holiday (with kids) with Ryanair, but would on my own or with my husband.
At the end of the day its all about choice, and you chose Ryanair, cheap flights, dear extras, how do you know they're still not the cheapest deal you would have got because you haven't priced up any of their competitors to compare.
  • I've never heard such rubbish.

I simply stated at the beginning of this thread that I did not like their baggage fees. I know flights are definitely not cheap, but Ryanair's extra charges are outrageous.

I genuinely hope that MSE members in other sections are much more friendly and helpful than all who replied to this thread.

Despite that, thanks for taking time out of your evidently busy lives, simply to defend a rubbish airline and accuse me of ignorance and idiocy.

    Thank you all,

    Rory

You're right "Pollycat", there is no 'normsl'.

    But there is a 'normal'.

    Way to go, Rory.:T

Why does such an utterly pedestrian observation deserve a thread on an internet forum? If you feel their product is overpriced then don't purchase it, that's what every "normal" person does.

I asked what your definition of a horrible seat is, you didnt respond.

I dont care where i sit as many people dont so why should I pay to subsidise those that do?

You now know that the vast majority of people dont take hold luggage, why should those subsidise those that do?

The pricing is there for all to see.

I am not defending Ryanair and i dont work for them but i have benefited from some cheap flights with no extras added.

Was your flight still cheaper than BA etc even after all the add ons

it states quite clearly says on the expedia booking page. Hand luggage only is included in the price and extra may be charged by the airline.
i thought film makers needed an eye for detail

I have booked Ryanair before and do not remember the baggage fees being so high...

So having flown with the carrier before and understanding that the do charge for checked baggage you didn't reconfirm the baggage fees before you booked? If you didn't remember the fees were so high, it implies you remembered that they did charge extra for baggage?

I very much doubt we would travel with hand luggage only for anything more than a 2-night trip but that's just us..I know people who will go hand luggage only for a week or two. We wouldn't choose to do so, so we would evaluate flight prices including any additional charges we might incur and make our decision that way...but if an airline offers the basic fare with each add-on costing extra I cannot see how this is an 'illusion' of cheaper fares. They do give passengers the option to not pay for extras that they don't want/need and plenty do travel on the basic fare only.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

Expedia was used to book the hotel and flights in a package deal. I trusted Expedia, simply because why wouldn't iI?

Ok I'll bite again. When you book a flight and hotel deal through expedia, it displays your flight, with the Ryanair logo and directly underneath the flight times it says:
    Hand Baggage Only Fare

So they have told you it's hand baggage only. Furthermore that text is actually a clickable link. When clicked it takes you to a page which explains that hold baggage will be extra.

They do give you another chance though. On the final page where you enter your payment details, between the payment details and the big "Complete Booking" button, there's a summary box of your trip. Which includes:
Prices may not include baggage fees or other fees charged directly by the airline.

So they didn't hide it from you I'm afraid. I'll say it again you assumed baggage was included. It wasn't and you've had a nasty shock. More so considering Expedia do advise you.

You're entitled to think paying extra for baggage is not normal. You're entitled to think its extortion. I'm not sure when you last travelled short haul but paying extra is normal. Very normal and has been for years. And yes, many many people go hand baggage only now (the hand baggage allowance is pretty generous).

Not sure where you're going... But you could have flown a number of airlines. British Airways, Monarch, jet2, easyJet, Thomson, Thomas Cook among others. All of who charge you extra to take a checked suitcase.
