The other day in Morrisons there was a guy by the freshly made pizzas fridge. He took one off the shelf and all the others (which must have been badly stacked) just slid onto the floor.
He started to pick them all up but after reshelving a few he noticed that the 2 members of staff stood not 5m away just glanced up from their chat.. and then carried on chatting.
So he walked away and left the rest on the floor. Fair play to him, I'd have done the same.
5 mins later I walked past again on my way to the tills and the pizzas were still all over the floor, with people having to step between them all. The 2 staff had disappeared.. obviously just walked off ignoring the mess.

How does a supervisor supervise the checkouts, whilst walking down aisles?

Because 80% of their shift they are just standing about looking glakey. More so if it's a quiet period. It doesn't take them 2 minutes to scoot down an aisle and get the item themselves which would give better customer service, as it would be less time held up at the checkout.

What till workers? I said various department workers being called to checkouts. Only to be told to go fetch a pot of cream half a mile away.

    Half a mile? really?
Those would be the workers being called to work on the um... well tills.
So its now more than 2 minutes?

But then what if someone needed assistance and as you say the checkout supervisor is now having to do a half a mile walk. The checkout supervisor will then have someone complaining they weren't doing their job because they were nowhere to be seen.

You see this is their job. Assisting the checkout staff, getting a replacement product for a customer at the till as requested by the checkout operator.

Being a checkout supervisor is a promotion from being on a till or being a shelf packer. It's not part of their job description to go and find replacement product for a customer. It's their job to call for a member of staff to get this product.

A checkout supervisor always needs to be visible around the tills. They are then on hand if there is a problem and the till operator needs assistance.

No my point is what happens if then another customer requires them 5 seconds later but then they're not there because they've gone off to look for something. There's loads of tills in a Supermarket, 5 could need assistance at the same time. I don't see how it would work if the checkout supervisor was never actually at the checkouts because they are having to walk backwards and forwards around the store.

I know a couple of Morrisons staff and they have clearly defined roles and they are not allowed to deviate from them. Checkout supervisors are not permitted to leave the checkout area in the normal course of events. There are designated staff members who are 'runners'.
