  • Well can you believe, this happened again, although this time not to my son!

I was in the ladies, with my daughter, and a man of about 40 years old was in there with his elderly mum, he had Down's syndrome, and one woman, not the same one who shouted a use at me, ;) had the nerve to tell her the only place for him was the disabled toilets (there wasn't one close by) or she should make him go to toilet outside :0, and that this was not the place for grown men!

I went berserk, on behalf of this lady, who was about 75-80 yrs old, and was so upset, she cried :( !!!!!! is wrong with people?

That's disgusting moomoomama :( Well done to you for speaking up, and it hope the "lady" in question was suitably ashamed of herself?

I think this is a different issue. That's a grown adult, albeit one with a disability. I have never in 40 years seen an adult man in the ladies toilets, disabled or not. Occasionally you see signs warning you that there MAY be a male cleaner on duty, but not a man using the ladies loos.

She had no right to be nasty though.

But what does it matter? You can't see anything in a ladies toilet only people washing hands where you can see anywhere. If the ladies had an equivalent of urinals I would understand it, but I just can't see what the fuss is about everything is done behind closed doors.

Would you rather the women took her son into the mens meaning an opposite member of sex would see everything. If the mens consisted of only cubicles this would probably be the better option, but they don't so the poor women had no choice.

Well done OP for speaking up for the Mother. I hope the women who said something was ashamed.

Really, that surprises me, I've often seen the opposite sex in ladies toilets, mostly little boys, but occasionally disabled, especially Downs syndrome. It's never bothered me at all, I expect they are safer being their with their female carer than left to deal with a male loo. Mostly I would think they'd use the disabled toilet, but sometimes that's not an option.

I think it would be a sad day in society if we had to have signs warning us of a disabled man accompanying their mother into a ladies loo!

There is a reason why there are separate mens and womens toilets.

Personally I don't like the thought of going in there after a man's peed over the floor and left the loo-seat up. The women are bad enough at leaving the loo in a dreadful state I dread to think what the mens is like. Also I don't like the thought of a man I don't know being in the next cubicle while I'm in the loo. I don't care that he can't see me, nor me him, it'd just feel weird :rotfl:

I agree though that the poor old lady may have felt she didn't have a choice if there wasn't a disabled toilet available. Thinking about it, in the mall where I go shopping I don't think there's a unisex or disabled loo. That's a bit of an oversight, as there clearly is a need for unisex or disabled toilets.

As far as I'm aware, they do have toilets in now.

I would personally be rather peeved if a parent with a huge pram went into the disabled toilet and forced me to wait. I can't wait and can't use the ladies toilets either.

On the subject of swimming pools - when we had the single sex changing rooms at one swimming pool, there always seemed to be little naked boys running about. We're now in another centre and there's a ladies, mens and general (it's called a changing village) changing room. Oddily, there seems to be no naked little boys running around now. In both places, there is cubicles to change in.

Everyone has the same rights in my opinion - able bodied, disabled, male, female, child or adult.

My view is that having a wee in the appropriate toilet is something that should be taught as social skills. I assumed she didn't go in the cubicle with him? So the only difference between standing behind the cubicle and behind the door of the entrance of the male toilet is a few feet and a wall. Is there that much difference if she stood outside of the male toilet, and then called to him if he wasn't out after a few minutes, and then gone in saying sorry guys if she was concerned about her son.

I wonder whether it is his decision to go into women toilets or his mum's. Shouting at this old lady was a pathetic and rude way of dealing with the situation though.

It was a huge complex, there was no way she could have just stood outside and been behind a wall, the toilets have huge cloakrooms before you go into the main toilets,of which there are about 50 toilets or so!

The man had severe Down's syndrome, perhaps teaching social skills was not possible.

To be fair.....it only takes a few minutes for someone unpleasant to take advantage of a vulnerable person :(

There are many variables.....maybe he doesn't shut the door? (that doesn't occur to my son) Maybe he needs prompting to re-dress? Maybe he needs help to undo buttons/zips etc?

And sometimes you can't use the disabled toilet because a parent is in their with their offspring because *the queue was long* or *he/she needed to go now* or *insert random reason*.

My son has the toilet abilities of a 2 year old (he's almost 17).....HE needs to go right now as well!

My son is the same he still has accidents at seven as he can't wait :( Its a nightmare when you go out isn't it? I am hoping he will eventually grow out of it. I have never used a disabled toilet with him as he isn't entitled and I would get 'looks' from other people.
