I was beginning to look my age so the hairdresser sorted it yesterday with some colour which suits me. It is really easy to slob about in relaxed fit clothes but I need to look smart for work so I try not to wear baggy t shirts and I don't possess any leggings, my mantra is just because you fit in them it doesn't make you look good. I am not as slim as I would like to be but tailored trousers and a nice top look 1000 times better than leggings stretched to the max...
I agree a bit of subtle make up really helps to cover up imperfections and I now religiously do a face cleanse routine to keep my skin looking good.

I think all the talk of what you'd look for in a new partner is just fantasy, a bit like what you'd do if you won the lottery!

In RL, I think people would be far more sensible.

I have to agree completely with jaylee though. When I turned myself round from being a baggy bag lady I did it for me. Compliments from my DH are a bonus but not my reason for making the best of myself.

Thanks Maman. :) Yes I DO think a woman should do what she wants for her personal development for HER, not for anyone else.

I am not quite 40 yet (a few years to go LOL,) so I guess I have all this (potentially looking older than my years in middle age,) to come. :D

Definitely Jaylee. The pursuit of constant self development, for your own pleasure and sense of self is what keeps life so interesting as each decade passes IME.

I never worry about how old I look.

As long as I can still breathe and walk the dog every day, I am happy.

Oh and so is the dog. :D

Tongue in cheek comment here but don't stand next to lovely young 17 year olds if you don't want to be thought older! I can look in the mirror and think "Yes, not bad, looking good today" and then DD stands next to me and bam, I instantly look another 20 years older, lol. I looked just like her at that age, there's absolutely no comparison now. I'm not bad for where I am though. As long as you're not looking at the Before and After pictures!

Instead of the leggings, wear wide leg loose stretchy trousers (I do). Much more flattering - and hide a multitude. They stretch with you so you don't end up with too much of a muffin-top like with 'normal trousers' that have no give (especially on the waist). Always wear a top long enough to cover an obvious tummy.

Don't dress 'too young'. I have a friend in her mid-50s who always looked WAY younger. She was so beautiful. In the last 10 years, she has really started looking her age. Her BF is over 20 years younger and she's (not surprisingly) been mistaken for his mother. It's weird how it's really caught up. But... as an outsider, I see that she obviously feels exactly the same inside and not any older - but some of the things she wears etc do her no favours. She has very girlie young taste and I've seen her with things like pink bows on the top of her head and colours with things like nail varnish you'd expect to see on a 14 year old (says me with blue nail varnish on lol), and her handbags and jewellery can look a bit tacky/young on her now. I'm sure it just ages her further. Sometimes she looks a bit of a batty old woman (not that you are - nor her!) but you know what I mean - really trying to say it in the nicest way but it's kinda hard lol!

Just sayin' there comes a point when, if you do start looking that much older, maybe it's time to change your taste or what you wear. Or you can just do a 'Denise Welch' and wear a bright pink dress that everyone labelled 'inappropriate' to a wedding at the weekend but I thought was fab and a giant 2 fingers up to all who try to tell her (and her OH) how to dress/be.

I am 44 btw and size 18 - and also often have my (long-ish) hair tied back in a ponytail. I know I am running out of years I can get away with it. I have the front side bits a bit curly today and it looks nicer - and a chignon is even nicer, but OMG I just know it'll have to come off soon as I know it's far too young a look for me.

Bobs aren't always for everyone, but the version I love is when it's higher at the back and longer at the front ('long angled bob' - see pics here https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=bob+angled&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=tGffU9LeI8ek0QXho4DICg&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1064&bih=814#q=bob+long+angled&tbm=isch) - it's very flattering and when I've had mine like that I always get compliments.

I've always looked much younger too and I feel your pain. I haven't noticed the lines as such, but I can see I'm starting to just look 'older'.

I look through my eyes the same as I did 20 years ago. It's hard to adjust.

Stay away from obvious-pinks, etc - go for much darker eye make-up (surprisingly). Think smoky eyes. Nude lips are far better than pink.

Hmmmmm, thanks for the comments folks. And I am not offended Ska lover. I couldn't BE more offended than I already have been this past year or so!!!

Keep the comments and suggestions coming people. Be honest. Not cruel and brutal LOL, but honest, :D

Maybe it IS time to change my hair but I do adore being blonde. I think blonde is youthful? Maybe? I had it darkish a couple of times in the last 5 years; it didn't suit me as my face is pale.

Maybe being a chubster is ageing me too. :(
Dark hair can suit pale faves better than blonde try getting it died as a brunette
